Oovoo, Skype, and Fox News

I’m taking private communication lessons through Olsen Speech in an attempt to be a better speaker, a more effective communicator, and an awesome (future) pundit on Fox Business News, CNBC, and Bloomberg News.

(Need someone to talk about HR and workforce issues? Call me in a few weeks when I’m done with my communication sessions — and when my hair grows out. I’m still stuck with this frumpy, post-Posh Cut. It’s finally long enough to pull it back into a samuri-style ponytail.)

Anyway, back to the point of this post: working with Olsen Speech means that I’m also using technology to facilitate the sessions where we can’t meet face-to-face. I joined the 21st century and signed up for a Skype account, and I also created an account on Oovoo. The applications are great and make communicating so much easier, but the experience of talking to someone on the internet feels all Jetsons. It’s like — okay I am wearing lip gloss and I’ve brushed my hair; however, I’m also wearing sweatpants that you can’t see.

Weird feeling, guys, but totally cool.

If you’re not using Skype or Oovoo, go check them out. The Punk Rock HR rule of thumb for technology is simple: you need to be as savvy as your dumbest employee.

Once you’re signed up, let me know and we can chat (unless you are a stalker).

Please forgive me for this shameless promotion…

Political-Buzz.com is hosting a political video chat (any and all Q’s on the campaign) on ooVoo through their “My ooVoo Day: Political Edition.” Dates are July 30 and August 3, both days at Noon Eastern for one hour.

There’s one other step to Skype: The Magicjack. Yes, I own one and amzingly it does work. I tested the phone with my brother and he said he can hear me more clearly with the Magicjack than on the regular landline. Also, it only costs $20/year and you can make unlimited calls anywhere in the U.S. and Canada. Sorry this sounds like a sales pitch, but I am really enjoying the Magicjack.

Of course, the flaws of it is a bit too big, and does heat up very quickly and I’m bit worried it would explode. Otherwise, it’s a great product.
