Wal-Mart Greeters Like Democrats

I love the L.A. Times & its Top of the Ticket blog for so many reasons. The blog is staffed with great writers who link politics to Human Resources issues without making the subject matter seem boring or mundane.

How do they do it? Can someone teach me to be interesting, witty, and relevant when I write about Wal-Mart?

I love Dan Morain’s reporting in this piece about Wal-Mart and its employees’ political contributions. He writes, “Evidently, some Wal-Mart employees didn’t get the word about the McCain-TBA ticket. They’re still giving their cash to Democrats, even though, as the Wall Street Journal disclosed, the retailing behemoth from Bentonville, Ark., is trying to persuade its store managers and department supervisors to vote Republican.”

Who knew that your neighborhood Wal-Mart greeter liked Democrats? Aren’t those the very same people who rallied against socialized medicine and hated Bill Clinton with a passion?

I also learned that Wal-Mart’s political action committee is evenly split in its contributions (52% to GOP candidates and 48% to the Democrats), which is a sharp contrast from the 1990s. If Wal-Mart is hedging its bets and giving money to candidates in both parties, I’m pretty sure that the Employee Free Choice Act is doomed to FAIL.

If you scroll through the rest of the Top of the Ticket blog, you’ll see that so many of the subjects related to the 2008 presidential campaign are really workforce-related.

For what it’s worth, Top of the Ticket is the best HR blog around — and I’m kind of irritated because, really, they are on my turf.
