I am making lovely iMixes for each business-related trip because some readers are now suggesting songs.
“You’re in New York City. Check out this band.”
This is exactly why I blog. Unfortunately, the challenge is that I have to use songs that I purchased through iTunes. Also, if I hear a song at an airport 2x, I’m using it. I am taking this as a sign.
Just a few more things.
- I am picking one Smiths/Morrissey song for each mix. I’m sorry. It is required.
- Most songs just have a line or something random that reminds me of a moment. For example, the best song that reminds me of the NYC train/subway system is Kundalini Express. I know, I know. My mind is jacked up.
- Is there hidden meaning behind the mixtape? Sorta. Maybe. I don’t know. Isn’t that the joy and sorrow of looking through a musical list? You never know what the creator wants you to think and feel, and I am not sure it matters. It is up to you to derive meaning from the songs. All great art requires observation, reaction, and reaction. Rinse and repeat. Do it again.
- Know this: I am no longer 14 and I can’t make a mix tape that drips with sentiment, irony, or existential heartbreak. I never could, actually.
Enjoy. Or don’t. I don’t care.

What is is about HR bloggers and music? You, Paul Smith, AftonFunk, and me. Maybe it’s the next step in the evolution of the profession?
TMBG “New York City” makes me so happy every time I hear it. Thanks for sharing these iMixes.
L, have you been moonlighting as a DJ?
Love your mixes – patti Smith anf the Stooges!
maybe you are “punk”!!!

@victorio HR is known for planning good parties. We need music.
@spacedcowgirl Me too! Thanks for validating my geekiness.
@Mark Thanks. Punk? Duh. I have classic roots despite my love of Lady Gaga.
Love this mix. Blondie is so kick ass. Debbie Harry was my idol when I was a kid. She was hot, and you knew she’d never take any shit from anyone.
I’ll second the Smiths/Morrissey rule.
And I totally fangirl Gaga, even though I’m technically old enough to be her mother. I’ve been caught dancing at my desk to her a number of times. I really need to move to a less visible location of the building.
Great mix!
Love Peaches. “Precious” is one of my favorite Pretenders songs.
And any mix with any Kirsty MacColl song is alright by me. (And I’m pretty sure I have every one she’s ever done!)
I still make mixes for people, though I am mostly kickin’ it old skool and still burning them onto CD’s. I’ll have to look into this Interwebs thing!
@HAria I’m going to see her in Raleigh if it kills me.
@Patrick Peaches reminds me of @colsblog and Precious is just such a bad ass song. I love how you love Kirsty MacColl. I was walking through the JFK T5 terminal and heard the Tracy Ullman version of the song — both to NYC and from NYC — and I thought it was a sign. Also, I love how you’re making mix CDs. I can’t tell you how many cassettes melted in my old Chevy Malibu during the hot Chicago summers.
I found something you might like:

I have loved Dave Edmunds for sooooo long. My grandma even liked Dave Edmunds! I love you for including him. And I will always go crazy for Kundalini Express. Which reminds me that I have seen both Love and Rockets and Dave Edmunds live.
A word about mix cds/tapes. There is a Scottish tv show called Sea of Souls. Two female characters were talking and their male coworker walked up to one of them and gave one of them a mix tape he made for her, then he walked away. The one girl then commented to the receiver of the mix tape that the next step would be a quiet, romantic dinner. Apparently mix tapes/cds lead to things like that. I will be waiting for my dinner but it doesn’t have to be quiet and it doesn’t have to be romantic. But I do expect it to be wildly fun!
