Desk Rage & Workplace Anger

by Laurie on July 12, 2008

Nothing cures desk rage like a 10% salary increase and a day off.

A 10% raise would makes up for lagging wages & the bullshit that goes along with having a job in America, these days.

UPDATE: John Hollan has an excellent post on desk rage as a “manufactured trend’ during an otherwise slow news cycle. He wrote, “Violence, both verbal and otherwise, is a huge workplace issue, and that makes me wonder

Just to be clear — I think workplace violence is a real issue worthy of a great deal of attention. In my blog post however, I pointed out that there is zero new evidence to indicate that it is any worse right now, or that there are any new studies to show that it is a bigger deal today than a month ago. The “desk rage” story could have been written anytime, and that’s my problem: it makes people think there is some new crisis when in fact, the problem remains the same …

Hey John, thanks for the clarification. Great point of view.

It’s real. I’ve seen it. I’ve even had it directed at me. During a meeting, no less. I asked a question – that was totally normal by the way – and this guy just exploded. I swear he almost burst into flames. He threw papers across the table (none of them “hit” anyone…because they were papers), stood up and literally stomped his foot while yelling something about Lenin in his tomb. No shit.

Everyone was like WTF?

I had this happen to me during a n4p board meeting. The guy was like, LOOK AT THIS BUDGET! JUST LOOK!

Then he threw papers all over and stormed out.

Obviously frustrated by other aspects of his life, he decided to bring his rage into a meeting where people should have been talking about saving cats & puppies.

Ugh.
