One of my readers asked if I would create a musical list for my trip to San Diego — much like I did for London — and I thought it was a good idea but I decided to skip it because it was too much trouble.
Then @imsosarah started tweeting her play list and I thought, fine, I’ll play along.
So here is my list, yo. Enjoy.

All you need is some They Might Be Giants and you’ll be all set.
@econopete I know, it has a decidedly 90s vibe.
Given that you like some offbeat stuff, you should try some Röyksopp, especially if you ever played Space Invaders:

Nice, particularly the selections from The Breeders, Janes and Foo Fighters.
@econopete Will check it out — but I never played Space Invaders. I don’t play many video games. Never caught on with me.
@Ben I don’t listen to enough music in my life. Do you ever feel that way? Making these iMixes reminds me of that. Also, PS, it’s not as fun as making a mix tape. Sorta, but it doesn’t scratch the itch.
foof fighters and Jane’s addidiction…new found respect (for your musical taste)…but ryan Adam’s doing Wonderwall…stick with the original…by OASIS!…
Gee I might need to flip some music with you…add some Paramore doing acoustic off you tube…their catchy quick pop rock with a “punk” edge…and she can sing (check out “decode” live acoustic in the green room -radio station performance) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V12bPb8j0OA
…you will be hooked…and you will get some “punk” cred on the music side too!!!

I think some people miss the point of a playlist is more about the songs that remind me of something that happened on a particular trip – not the song I happened to be listening to at the time.
<3 it

Yes, yes!! The Smoking Popes! Good choice to save you from obligatorily having to change the site name to Alt Rock HR from Punk Rock HR
You can’t have punk rock without Fugazi, Black Flag, The Minutemen, the Sex Pistols, X and Bad Brains. It’s almost like making a BLT with gluten-free soy bacon.
Gosh, this is a list of songs that remind me of my trip — not an opportunity for self-schooled musical purists to school one another on the true origins of punk. I mean, really, are we going there?
I’m not a purist. I even like the Miley Cyrus song that name drops Britney Spears and Jay-Z (interesting juxtaposition there), Justin Timberlake, and can really boom some “Gettin Jiggy Wit It” when the inspiration strikes. I just thought “punk rock” meant punk rock and was giving you a little (intended-to-be-good-natured) grief.
LOL, Scott, no worries.
I was responding more to comments, emails, and DMs that go something like this.
- You call yourself punk rock?
- This list sucks.
- What are you? A baby boomer trying to be cool?
Stuff like that. I mean, sheesh, it’s a list of songs. This isn’t a scene from High Fidelity.
Also, FYI, I wanted to add this song but I don’t have it in my iTunes database and I didn’t want to buy it.

I used to do mix tapes and playlists, but typically I just immerse myself/obsess on one band for several months, or even a year or two at a time. Currently it’s The Pixies & Frank Black. 2nd or 3rd time around on them. Could be back to Pavement next.
My problem isn’t I don’t listen to music enough. I listen at the gym and in the car and am learning guitar (when I have the time). My problem is that I have trouble finding new bands to like, so I keep going back to the old ones, which isn’t bad. It’s fun sometimes to rediscover music that you used to love.
Anyway, my brother gave me some mix-CDs that I need to take a listen to someday. Maybe I’ll find something new there.
Punk rock? What’s that? *looks at website title* hmm. I wonder if they’re related somehow…
