F@%k It Friday: Super Bowl XLIV

by Laurie on February 5, 2010

You knew it was coming because it’s Friday, no one is really working, and everyone is talking about the Super Bowl — America’s only secular holiday that keeps getting infused with politics and religion.

It’s Friday, and I simply want to know what you’re eating on Super Bowl Sunday. Aren’t food and commercials the real reason for the game?

Scratch that. The real reason for the Super Bowl is The Puppy Bowl!

I plan my day around the Puppy Bowl. Got the chips & salsa, pizza and narchos ready for the puppy kickoff. Go mutts!!!

Tracy Tran February 5, 2010 at 7:26 am

This weekend was suppose to be special:

The appetizer: Penguins vs. Capitals
Mid-Course: The Puppy Bowl
Entree: Super Bowl

Got chips, salsa, queso, pizza, and a bunch of drinks on sale at Costco. The Penultimate is having a Man V. Food tailgate party, if you saw their Super Bowl show this past week.

However, SNOWMAGEDDON has ruin the appetizer (I guess the Tears of Yanni and Crosby have affected DC weather this weekend) and I’m worried the Puppy Bowl announcer will be annoying since Harry Kalas passed away last year.

BTW, Colts are going to win, but I’m rooting for the Saints.

akaBruno February 5, 2010 at 7:42 am

I’m rooting for the Saints for my good friend, Robin Schooling!

In terms of food, living in Wisconsin means it will be cheese, brats, cheese, beer, bacon, cheese.

Sharlyn Lauby February 5, 2010 at 7:57 am

We’re going to nosh on some chips and guac. For dinner this year, we’re having buffalo chicken sliders. I’m rooting for Indy this year! And, let’s hope the commercials are good…

HR Minion February 5, 2010 at 8:01 am

I just need to warn people now, that if you can’t handle live tweeting of the Puppy Bowl, then you may need to ignore me for a bit this weekend.

HRputer February 5, 2010 at 8:21 am

I’m interested to find out what I’ll be eating during the Super Bowl. I’ve got a couple of other Americans to go out with here in Ireland and we plan on having a few pints of Guinness at minimum. Game starts at 11:30pm local time.

I find it entertaining trying to explain to my European colleagues the commercialization of the sport. They are baffled that a game would stop for advertising.

To make it a truly international weekend, I’m going to see Ireland vs. Italy in the Six Nations Rugby Championship on Saturday. Ireland are the defending Champions. At regular intervals, I’m sure that I’ll have the opportunity to defend American Football’s use of helmets and pads.

Joan Ginsberg February 5, 2010 at 8:47 am

I didn’t know the Super Bowl was on Sunday until I read this blog. I haven’t planned tonight’s dinner yet, let alone anything for Sunday.

WTF is the Puppy Bowl?

Geoff February 5, 2010 at 8:48 am

Oh well, of course I’ll be having Grilled Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich with Bacon and Coleslaw and Fries…I mean D’uh.

spacedcowgirl February 5, 2010 at 9:10 am

LOL @Joan, I see we have similar outlooks (re: I don’t know what I am eating tonight much less for the Super Bowl :) ).

The Puppy Bowl is a program on Animal Planet where puppies are given toys and put in a play area shaped like a mini football field and allowed to play for hours during the Super Bowl. There is an announcer and that’s pretty much all there is to it. It is awesome.

I fear that we will not have anything good to eat because we are going to a friend’s house who tends to be pretty laissez-faire about the whole food thing (someone will probably bring wings, which I hate–but which I think are a brilliant coup of marketing because they allow restaurants to sell something at a per-piece price that nobody would otherwise want–and that is about all I can say with any confidence. Don’t get me wrong, I really do appreciate this guy hosting). So I think I will try to come up with something to bring in the Crock Pot, and maybe some veggies.

SalesComp February 5, 2010 at 9:21 am

Gin & Tonics

I will need to wfh this weekend and will not have chance until Sunday afternoon. I will probably be working, watching the game and drinking G&Ts at the same time.

JKJHR February 5, 2010 at 9:38 am

Going to a friend’s annual Super Bowl party and tradition will call for beef sandwiches and grilled salmon and shrimp, along with assorted munchies. I will have the Puppy Bowl on as background earlier in the day and will be pulling for the Saints. Love the Black and Gold.

JohnC February 5, 2010 at 9:40 am

I am skipping the bowl to paint pottery with my 17 year old daughter, its our last year living under the same roof. She is headed to college and I am moving to Spain and we are taking advantage of the time we do have..

adowling February 5, 2010 at 9:42 am

Beer, a nice hoppy ale for me and something dark and heavy for the hubby. Oh, you said food, my bad. Chili, homemade because its going to be cold here. We’ll probably throw in some chips and dip. Neither of us are NFL fans but I’m rooting for the Saints because I have a few friends from NOLA, fan via osmosis.

Geekette February 5, 2010 at 9:58 am

Shoot, I once worked on a football related product and I still don’t know WTF its about, just that it involves a field crowded with men in spandex charging each other. Not high on my hotness meter.

So no bowl here & I don’t know what I’ll eat then. But I just savoured a good cup of coffee with goodies from a European bakery, so that’s a good start to the wknd.

Ian February 5, 2010 at 10:07 am

Beer is food, right? Lots of that.

Maybe I’ll try ordering a pizza. We did that during the Grey Cup and it took so long due to the high volume of orders that we got it for free, so maybe it’ll happen again. Nothing tastes better than free pizza when you’re watching Saskatchewan lose the game because they got a penalty for too many men on the field during the game-deciding field goal attempt.

Go Colts!!

Becky February 5, 2010 at 10:17 am

I, oddly enough, will be doing almost the complete OPPOSITE of anything Super Bowl related. :) I am going to a Bridal Show in Dallas. Part of me is terrified (I don’t subscribe to most traditional marriage stuffs) and part of me is terribly amused. I have a feeling I will be munching on cake samples, chocolate fountains and various other examples of things I probably won’t have at my wedding. Tee Hee.
@ Ian – YES…Beer is FOOD!
(I might look for the Puppy Bowl on Hulu or the Animal Planet website tho…hmmm)

Deirdre Reid February 5, 2010 at 11:01 am

We’re having chips and salsa and queso, grilled jalapenos stuffed with cheese and wrapped with bacon, bbq sauce/cranberry jelly meatballs in the crockpot (yeah it’s good), some kind of stuffed fried chicken thing from the freezer and if I get my act together tomorrow I’ll make clam chowder to last the weekend. Burp.

spacedcowgirl February 5, 2010 at 11:04 am

Oh, forgot to say (you know, because it is just so crucial that I put this out there)… I am conflicted about who to root for because I went to Purdue for grad school, so I am really excited that Brees gets a chance at winning a Super Bowl. On the other hand, we were Colts fans while living in Indiana, and I am one of the (perhaps few?) remaining people who really likes Peyton Manning. So I don’t know. I imagine I will do what I do whenever I watch a team that is not Michigan State and just feel sorry for whoever is losing at any given time.

BZTAT February 5, 2010 at 11:05 am

Is the Super Bowl this weekend?

Brew will have to watch for Srubby’s tweets about the Puppy Bowl. I recall he was quite the citizen journalist last year.

Oh, and I will be drinking beer, but not watching the Super Bowl.

Laurie February 5, 2010 at 11:22 am

We really need to paint our house. This is a good motivator for me. It’s still the original ‘new construction’ paint. Ugh.

***

@Fran AMEN! I like the kitten half-time special, too. :)

@Tracy Your predictions are so wise. I’m with you on the announcer fears — but it might be okay.

@Bruno I’m with you on the bacon. I might ask Ken to make a few bacon-wrapped chicken wings.

@Sharlyn I’m not hopeful about the commercials. :(

@Minion Pffft. How can anyone be annoyed with that? What’s the hashtag? Did you know animal planet is on Twitter? They follow Scrubs.

@Puter OMG, it takes FOREVER for the superbowl to start. You’ll be up late.

@JOAN Get thee to the internet and google puppy bowl. You’ll love it.

@Geoff Duh indeed!

@Spaced I love my husband’s wings but I hate restaurant wings. He adds celery salt and we never do breaded. Mmmmmmm….

@Sales G&T sound pretty good right now.

@JK Go saints!

@JohnC That’s sweet. I hope you eat something unhealthy with her to honor the day. :)

@adowling CHILI FTW.

@Geekette Ah, you’re part of the enlightened class. Harumph!

@Ian Pizza delivery takes forever on Superbowl Sunday. #fact #beerisfood

@Becky OMG, bridal show? Awesome. When I got married, I went to one bridal story (Gigi’s Closet in Glenview, IL) and tried on five dresses and picked one for $300. My Mom said, “That’s the one.” I was like, meh, I don’t care, just get me down the aisle before I gain any more weight. I wish I could do that all over again. I’d forget about the weight (all 139 pounds of me at the time — I was sooooo huge, whatever, I’m an idiot) and focus on enjoying the experience.

@Deidre Snap, I might FINALLy come over to your house. Those jalapenos sound awesome.

@space That’s just like Ken — but we both think Manning is a dork (although he was hilarious on SNL) so we’re down with NO.

@BZ LOL.

Deirdre Reid February 5, 2010 at 11:49 am

@Laurie We really don’t want to share. ;-)

The gold digger February 5, 2010 at 11:53 am

If we were watching, which we are not, because Time Warner wouldn’t negotiate and cut our cable rate and we were tired of paying $70 a month not to watch TV so now we have a big DVD-watching machine in our basement, and the Packers aren’t playing and neither are the Vikings so Brett Farve is already out so hahahahaha so my husband doesn’t care anyhow, we would make cream-cheese stuffed bacon wrapped jalapenos and grill them until the bacon is cooked and the jalapenos are soft.

We might make them anyhow.

The gold digger February 5, 2010 at 11:56 am

OK Deirdre, I didn’t read the other posts until I had written mine. You and I are obviously soulmates. Is that not the best use for jalapenos in the world?

Robin S February 5, 2010 at 11:56 am

Yay @akaBruno – you’ve come to the light (!) If it can’t be the Pack….. right?

@HRputer – I’m jealous of your Six Nations adventure; we are a rugby family and in between SB excitment, will be watching Six Nations rugby all weekend via satellite.

As for the menu? Abita Beer, possibly some gumbo, Zapp’s WhoDat chips, more Abita Beer, plus stuff I can hold in one hand since I will be pacing non stop. And I might have to grab a Black and Gold king cake in order to have something sweet on hand to go with the beer.

Is it Sunday yet??

MattyMat February 5, 2010 at 12:11 pm

I have no idea where I’m going to watch the Super Bowl, nor what I’m going to eat during said Super Bowl. I’ll probably “eat” a shot of whiskey and a beer chaser (contrary to popular beleif, it does get cold in Cali sometimes) because that IS food— and definitely check out this so-called Puppy Bowl—!! Is there any “pit fighting” involved?? LOL pictures of puppies or kittens usually makes me ill—-

Ryan Coslett February 5, 2010 at 12:12 pm

We’re not from New Orleans, but it’s gonna be all Cajun cuisine on Sunday! Muffuletta, shrimp and andouille cakes, chicken gumbo, skillet cornbread, fried okra and, oh yeah, a keg of Abita Amber. Go Saints!

David February 5, 2010 at 12:21 pm

I hear Team Srubby is a 5 Pt favorite.

I visited New Orleans one time and it was enough to make me a fan. I am a Big Ten…err, 11 fan so rooting for Brees is a breeze (yeah, that was bad).

And this Super Bowl is x-tra special as I am working on the NFL/Ticketmaster Super Bowl social media campaign :)

p.s – Loved the video!

Joan Ginsberg February 5, 2010 at 12:28 pm

@Laurie – I did the Google search after posting. I might consider watching Puppy Bowl but it means turning on the television. I usually only do this a few times per year. Gotta step outside of my comfort zone for TV.

@spacedcowgirl – You are absolutely right about the wings. I come from food processing/manufacturing. There was a time when we couldn’t give chicken wings away – now they are the most expensive part of the bird. Brilliant and ridiculous.
Also, a friend sent me a GREAT email that contains a ton of slow cooker recipes that you just click the link to access the recipe file. If you want me to send it, email me at ginsberg.joan@gmail.com and I’ll forward it to you.

MattyMat February 5, 2010 at 1:22 pm

@Joan G. Hooters still has the best wings!

Deirdre Reid February 5, 2010 at 1:24 pm

@The gold digger: They are heavenly. Although I must confess to having a health-endangering love for lots of chopped pickled jalapenos (and ham, onion and garlic) in macaroni and cheese from the box. So much for my foodie credentials!

Amy February 5, 2010 at 3:08 pm

Every year our local boy scouts sell hoagies – pre-ordered, but made fresh and delivered to your door around lunch time. Awesome!

scottthekyhrguy February 5, 2010 at 4:19 pm
Laurie February 5, 2010 at 4:22 pm

@gold digger F–k time warner. #fact

@Ryan Nice!

@David Scrubby could take down Manning by peeing on him. :)

@Amy Cute!

@Scott My husband just asked, “Why would you want those caffeinated?” I’m like, “This is the red bull generation. Everything is caffeinated. Even air.”

The gold digger February 5, 2010 at 5:27 pm

Dierdre,

We have Dill Pickle Pringles in our house. We have Oreos. We are tolerant. Sometimes you want high cuisine. Sometimes you want Pringles. I love this country.

Jessica Miller-Merrell February 5, 2010 at 5:34 pm

Laurie,

I don’t think you can get any funnier. I love the shirt. We should get some for #trulondon! For those of us that are self-employed, I actually worked today (amazing, I know). Honestly, I really care less about the actual Super Bowl. I watch for the commercials. Lame, I know but it’s true.

As far as the food we eat we’re pretty traditional, wings, chips, spinach dip, and mudslides (my fav it’s like an ice cream sundae with alcohol).

Jessica

econopete February 5, 2010 at 10:57 pm

Wait, the super bowl is Sunday?

Suz February 5, 2010 at 11:12 pm

shrimps, crawdads if we can get them, abita beers, boudin…
I may be calling out drunk all week! hahaha
GO SAINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!

hrjefe February 6, 2010 at 3:15 am

Well here in So Cal we have hummus with pita bread, carrot and celery sticks with yogurt dressing, various types of sushi, and lots of fruits and nuts!

Good thing my parents were from back East and raised me right so our family feasts on plenty of chips, dips, cheese (out of a can the best!) lots of processed meats and beer or a good hard lemonade!

As we don’t have our own team (the Raiders never did count) I’ve recently adopted the Jets (my USC boy Mark Sanchez) and have always been a fan of the underdog “Aints” of only a few years ago. Oh, and my corporate office is in Indy so yea, I hate the Colts.

GO SAINTS!!!!

Jess February 6, 2010 at 11:00 am

I live in Indianapolis, and I will be holed up in my apartment eating pizza and conversational hearts.. watching the Puppy Bowl. I’m a disgrace to my city. And it’s not that I don’t like the Colts necessarily- they do good work. It’s the fans here I can’t fucking stand. Not only are they fair-weather, they are ruthless- which is a dangerous combination. I watched a guy get kicked out of a bar for wearing a Chargers hat a few weeks ago, and he wasn’t talking smack during a game… no, it was the mere presence of the hat alone that got the hillbillies riled up. If you utter a negative word about the Colts while in “Colts Country”, it’s considered blasphemy.
GO SAINTS!!!!!!

Caryn February 6, 2010 at 1:08 pm

I was hoping for burgers on the grill but the grill is under 8″ of snow today so it will be the traditional chips, wings, and assorted adult beverages. It’s always the Colts! And for the record, as an Indy resident, I do mean always — I’m not one of those fair weather types :) Laurie, you’re right, P Manning is very funny in a dry, witty kinda way. Gotta respect the balance of intense discipline and humor.

Laurie February 6, 2010 at 4:53 pm

@Caryn Stay warm!

@Jess I dunno — I think St. Louis Rams fans are pretty bad. I lived there and it was a mess. Go Puppy Bowl!

@HRJefe I’d like to adopt Mark Sanchez. Or have him for my Super Bowl meal. I mean, have him over for my Super Bowl meal. I’d never sexually harass a young man like that. Nope, not me.

@suz Whoa, authentic!

@Econopete :)

@Jessica C’mon, I’m self-employed, but we must uphold a tradition around here of blowing off work and thinking about other things. :)

Dysfunction Junction February 6, 2010 at 10:17 pm

Heee heee…I’m glad you like it! A regular birthday present just wouldn’t have worked for you.

As for the Super Bowl, that’s like football right? And it’s a touchdown not a goal? I is confused.

Kirsten February 7, 2010 at 7:11 am

Another @Mark_Sanchez fan!! Does Steve Boese know you share my passion for him? Wait, did I just say that out loud? Serious Mrs. Robinson complex going on here…
I’m whipping up a buffalo chicken dip today and will be watching with my pals in my neighbor’s man cave. Go Saints!

Jane February 8, 2010 at 10:42 pm

I’m late for this. It was tacos.

But on Friday our topic was the blizzard coming to NYC on Saturday.
Which never came. They’ve promised again for Wed. now.
