Hey guys, I am giving notice. Effective August 26th, I will no longer blog on Punk Rock HR.
I wanted to write a beautiful and thoughtful post that outlines the reasons why I’m leaving Punk Rock HR, but the reasons aren’t all that interesting.
- I’m starting a new company.
- The Punk Rock HR domain is owned by a company that has different goals, different values, and a different mission in the marketplace.
- I think it’s important to separate my personal brand, my new company’s brand, and the brand owned by Recruitingblogs.
It’s really that simple.
I wish Recruitingblogs nothing but success.
While I’m running my new company, I plan on (re)launching my personal blog. I will offer career advice and discuss important issues like feminism, politics, and bacon. I’ll talk about my cats, too. You may want to know what happens to the PunkRockHR.com domain after I stop writing. I don’t know. I think it’s important to keep this in perspective. The world is dealing with oil spills, earthquakes, and genocide. We have high unemployment in America and record underemployment. Cancer hasn’t been cured. None of this really matters.
From a technical perspective, there is no global trademark on the Punk Rock HR brand. Some dude had the idea for Punk Rock HR in the 80s. He runs a Facebook group, and he seems like a super cool guy. I run the social media sites on Twitter and Facebook and I will keep those in my portfolio. And there’s no shortage of options out there for people who are interested in blogs and websites on HR and related subjects.
In my ideal world, Recruitingblogs has great success with the domain. I have lots of ideas. I bet you do, too. I hope it becomes the premier site for monkeys-grooming-cats videos. I would also accept a site that is dedicated to cats and treadmills.
That’s SEO gold, baby.
Thanks again for all of your support during the past three years, and thanks to Recruitingblogs for the awesome and seamless transition.

Sad to see the site go, but still heart the person behind it. Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us next.
I love that you commented first on this post. It’s perfect that way! (Thank you.)
I’ll follow you on your blogging adventures elsewhere. I like blunt and you have that in spades. I did forward your company to a homie who talks about social media in terms of marketing quite a bit though. I think she’ll dig it.
Awesome. Thank you for being such a great reader. Comments, interaction, feedback. I can’t ask for much more.
Congratulations on the new chapter you’re writing in your professional life! I can’t wait to see the great stuff you have on tap from the new company and blog. I would, however, humbly request that you jump at the chance to post any “monkeys grooming cats while on treadmills” videos. While they may be SEO gold individually, put ‘em together…well…your new sites may just explode from the awesomeness.
Andy, you get me. Thank you.
I like the look of your new site. I hope your comments will still be called grievances and complaints, which is priceless.
Thanks for all of your writing Laurie and we’ll look forward to more. Best of luck with New Media Services, seems like the right kind of company to start at the right time.
Thanks, miles!
What a new exciting change for you! Congratulations.
Rachl, you are awesome. Happy birthday week!
Change is good. Change is effective. Change is invigorating.
It is about the name of the blog, it is the person who blogs. It is easy to respect and connect with a person who has been in the trenches and now mixes cats, treadmills, bacon, conference fashion, real life with some trenches dulldrums mixed in.
It is about you, Laurie. It is quite easy to move my bookmark. See you around the bend.
Love this video and love your generous comment. Thank you.
Change is the only certainty we have in life and all change has elements of both hope and despair. Change is never easy and I am sure this was a tough decision for you to make. Personally I will miss the online persona of the Punk Rock Lady who open my eyes to social media’s role to my HR roots….but I anxiously await your future ventures into new and ground breaking territory.
Brava Laurie on your past work and Good Luck to your new beginnings!
Robert, you are a gem. Thanks for all of your support.
Congratulations on having the guts and courage to do some “creative destruction” with your career. That’s great advice, leading by example & going out on a high-note, all rolled into one. Good on ya!
It’s the end of an era in the blogosphere, and I feel lucky to have been around to see your insdpiring PRHR work. Can’t wait to see what you & your team cook up next!
Ken, that’s such a nice comment and you are part of the reason why I’ve been inspired to write. Hope I don’t let you down in the future.
PS – Jason Seiden always talks about self-destruction and I feel like I owe some of my downfall to him.
Sounds like a great decision for you, Laurie. Well done for having the guts to know that even good things have a sell-by date, and for taking yourself off in a fresher direction. I’m about to jump on to your Facebook page as I’d love to continue to follow you and see where you next put your fabulous energy!
Thanks, Christine! That’s so nice to read.
Dude, what an old school way to give notice to your fans. I can’t believe you didn’t learn anything from LeBron. You missed a tremendous opportunity to create uneeded hoopla (an oft underused word, btw) via a psuedojournotabloidification of “news”, stab your fans in the back by announcing you are taking your talents elsewhere, never thanking those who have supported you, and all the while use children as props for the event.
The fact that you have utilized “class”, “wit”, and executed this with grace, frankly sickens me. This is America, where we are free to use children as props for our own egomanical purposes! Props that must recognize our greatness and be able to gasp on command! Your lack of ego, just plain wrong…
Alright the sarcasm is over. Congrats on your new role, I’ll miss visiting this site everyday, but bigger and better things await you, and I look forward to watching your continued growth and success.
What? You didn’t catch my special on ESPN?
Thanks again for adding all that bacon to my life, Jim.
new beginnings always keep things spicy… best of luck
Thanks, Charlane!
Blah, blah, blah.
Where can I get my “Team Building is for suckers” T-shirt?
Hm. Let me get on this ASAP.
Best of luck with your new company, and thank you for Punk Rock HR. As an HR outsider lurking and voyeur-ing around your professional space, I learned a lot here.
You know, not to be a dork, but I’m the one who learns something new everyday. This is why I can’t stop writing.
DUDE! Harsh way to start the week. *rocking back and forth, looking around anxiously and other movements highlighted by the key combination*
*sigh*
Cool beans. I’m so there.
I’d like a t-shirt too, please.
LOL, your shirt is in the mail!
that’s supposed to be the shift – 8 -key combination. need more coffee.
Congratulations on the new adventure!
I’ll miss coming here as well, but I’m excited to see what you’ll achieve with the new start-up. (And as long as you post iMixes and pictures of cats every once in a while, we are totes cool.)
I owe you so much. Your article really launched my career. I can never pay you back. xoxo
Can’t wait to see where this goes, Laurie. You know we will all follow you to your new home. Best of luck and lotsa bacon. I’ll need the X-tra large shirt.
You got it. Shirt is on order.
I was a little {read: lots} bummed when I saw this…but then I saw you will have another blog. All is well. Phew! Congrats on the new venture!
I like @Simone ‘s idea – t-shirts. You should definitely do t-shits. T-shirts with a cat.
I love that you took the first comment on @thecynicalgirl. So fitting.
I’m tearing up and I’m hungry. I know you don’t need, but good luck nonetheless. I look forward to your next voice…
Here. Don’t tear up. And let me get you some bacon. xoxo
This makes me selfishly sad! But how amazing for you. I am very happy for you and wish you all the best in your new endeavour!
Thanks. I promise not to disappoint you or let you down if you read my personal blog. Okay, wait, I can’t make that promise. But thanks for the nice comment.
HUGS! I’m so excited about your new company and I’m so sad that you won’t be blogging here anymore. But hey, I’ll follow you to your new blog, no questions asked.
Schwoo. I’m glad you’ll follow me. What would I be without you???
Answer: nothing, pathetic, & alone.
Me too.
Cynical Girl….I heart that.
LOL, this was my blog at Pfizer. I’m just going back to my roots. My very dark, lazy, sweater-wearing brunette roots. I might even wear Talbots and my glasses.
Just catching up on the change at the end of the month (it’s early Mon morn here in Seattle…no coffee yet) but wanted to wish you every fabulousness in your new adventure and look forward to seeing whatever you do next! You made the difference for me on many occasion when I was looking for a useful, humorous, and honest approach to our often amorphous HR world. Thank you and see you in the interwebs!
Thank you, Richard!
Congratulations Laurie, Mark, and Yasha – good things to come for sure!!
Thanks, Amy!
Congratulations on the new venture. Honestly, I will truly miss Punk Rock HR. Reading your blog felt like an antidote to stories about really bad HR people and processes. I’ll miss that counter-culture feel, but greatly appreciate you offering it to your readers these past few years. Good luck.
RJ, that’s a great comment. Thank you so much!
Hooray for new directions! It’s sad to see PRHR go away, but you know I’ll follow you and Scrubby anywhere!
Thanks, Vicster. I’ve got your back, too!
Come
As you are
As you were
As I want you to be
As a friend
As a friend
As a known memory
Take your time
Hurry up
The choice is your
Dont’ be late
Take a rest
As a friend
As a known memory
Memory ah

“What else could I be? All apologies.”
I’m the cynical girl. I’ve been her since I started this blog. It’s really a harmonization of efforts.
*sniff* Progress is change. Change is hard. Embracing change with the excitement of what is coming next, that is easy! Rock it! Know you will! Thanks for all you do to bring a voice to HR online.
Lyn! Don’t cry for me, Argentina.
I’m really happy for you, the new site, the new business. Will follow you around the web for kickass commentary.
Thanks, Sarah!
Punk Rock comes from the soul and you’ll never lose that. See you on Cynical Girl and in person somewhere, someday, soon. Fact. XOXO
Love that you work in some Marshall Crenshaw into the comments. You just get me, Kari.
Laurie – I’m excited to learn more about plans for the new company and (I admit) a bit relieved that you do plan to keep blogging a bit. Your blog is one of my favs, so I’m glad to know you’ll be keeping your readers in the loop with your thoughts on feminism, cats and bacon! Can’t wait!
Miriam, you are the bomb. Talk to you in NYC!
You can take the punk out of the title but you can’t take the punk out of the girl. You are the brand.
I just can’t imagine a Punk Rock HR without you being a part of it. On the flip side, I’m glad that you’ll finally be blogging at the intersection of feminism and bacon where you belong.
Well said, Ryan. You’re hired as my agent. <3
bummer. I JUST found your site last week… bah. Looking forward to the new one.
Rats, oh well, you can follow me at http://thecynicalgirl.com — and I’ll have my entire archive over there so it should be easy to find me.
Good for you. And hopefully someday you can host Cynical Girl Conventions. I will totally be there (just make sure you hold them in Vegas).
OMG, brilliant. Do you want a job as the event planner? I think you’re too sharp for this HR stuff. When I make money, you’re employee #2 behind an IT guy who can back up my computer.
I am totally down with event planning. It’s way more fun than HR since I get to be in control of selecting booze and music, which are much more appealing skills than doing open enrollment.
Thanks for all the LOLs, WTFs, and OMGs. Best of luck and I look forward to reading your personal blog.
Thanks, Megan!
i love the straight shooter you are, no bullshit and i learn.
i am a fan
go laurie go.
Go Dina! Run!
I have an employee who is moving on with her personal life (to another country where her husband is from). Last week she gave me her official notice – 1 week’s notice!!! All I can do is wish her the best and move on.
So thank you for giving us THREE weeks notice.
It is appreciated. Also appreciated is all you’ve contributed. I’ve enjoyed reading and look forward to reading more. I say to you – Good luck in your new adventures!
I love that you noticed my notice period. Perfect HR comment!!
I enjoy popping by here from time to time. In true punk style I only do it when I can be bothered. I used to think punk was dead but then I stumbled in here. And last Saturday I saw The Damned play a great gig to a few thousand pogoing fans at the Croydon Festival. Punk’s not Dead – good luck with your continuing journey – Punk Rock HR is a cool name (jealous yup) and it’s been a cool place. No spitting eh?
Thanks, doug!!
i don’t care if it’s under the guise of “Punk Rock HR” or any other brand – as long as we get to muse over the random yet sage ramblings from you, L. Ruettimann, we’ll all be just fine. so psyched to watch you rock all this new stuff!
Wait, I’m on team Judy and I want a fishbowl t-shirt before this is all said & done.
i can’t wait to see what you do next… see you at #HRFlorida — safe travels…
See you soon, buddy!
Congrats on your new ambitions, but I will be sad to see you go!
Best of luck!
Thanks, Caroline!
Congrats on the new adventure, and ditto on the t-shirt request!
Why am I running a HR consulting company when I could just sit at home and open a CafePress store?
Wow…I can’t believe what I am reading. However, you can be sure I will be there to support your new venture.
Lots of success to you!
Karen, The Resume Chick (on Google or Twitter for questions, comments or violent reactions)
Karen, thank you. I really appreciate that!
Hi Laurie –
Thanks for creating a little extra edge in HR. To be honest, that has made it a better place for all of us.
Looking forward to crossing paths again.
Cheers
Neil
Neil, that’s so nice. Thank you.
Congratulations on the new company Laurie, no doubt you will be successful. I look forward to your new blog.
If you write it, they will come.
)
Oh that’s so encouraging. Thank you!
I totally get it Laurie. All the best!!
I’m looking forward to trying to keep up with you to see what madness you conjure up next! I found you 2 years ago and have enjoyed PRHR more than I can tell you. You have an awesome following – I devour everyone’s posts in my quest for constant improvement! Wishing you much success!
Bev, has it been two years? Holy smokes, you are awesome. Thanks for joining me on this crazy ride.
WooHoo!! I’m a freak that loves change…especially the perilous stepping off the precipice into the unknown kind. That’s where you learn what you’re made of.
And while fairly new to this blog, I can certainly tell you are made of the strong stuff that will see you soar to success at Cynical Girl. I can’t wait to have a new place to look forward to cheeky posts that are both entertaining and relevant.
Until next we post/reply…
You love change? Shoot, I need you to be my personal coach. I’m freaking. out.
One thing is for certain – it’s a good thing to recognize your fear – you’re human! Just because I love change, it doesn’t mean I don’t get the deer in the headlights, oh crap look in my eyes.
Just remember – air in…air out…who am I foolin’?! I ain’t no yoga-posin’ sea of calm. I’m the giddyup, put your seatbelts on – this is gonna be a bumpy ride!!
I really do love your new site. But bottom line, I don’t really care what the URL is. I read what you write #fact
OMG, thank you. I’ll keep writing. About what? Who the hell knows.
I am excited for you and your new role/venture!! Consider this a virtual *hug* and *high 5*– I hope to see you soon to give them IRL
I wish I had time to read all the blogs I’d like to, but yours is only one of two I simply do not miss – EVER. Frankly I don’t care what the hell you call your blog – I will be reading it!! Can’t wait to see what’s next….
Chris, it won’t be soon enough — and I’ll give YOU the hug!
Very excited for you and the important thing to me is that you’ll still be out there where we can read you. Onward and upward!!
Angela/Thrown Into Training
Thanks, Angela!
I offer to take over Punk Rock HR. I’m angry, have no human resources experience, am a crazy cat person, and I once spoke at #recruitcamp. I think that meets all the requirements.
Seriously though, I am very excited to see where New Media Services goes and what happens in your future. I expect to see awesome things.
You don’t need much more experience than that. I’m not sure you have enough cats, though.
Best of luck! I think I speak for most of us when I say I don’t terribly care where you write – as long as you still continue to write so I can still read your stuff (I’m selfish like that).
Congrats on the new biz!
Thanks, Stefanie!!
Via con dios, PRHR girl!
I suppose even Malcolm McLaren had to give up the punk, eventually.
Best of luck in your new (ad)venture.
He died of mesothelioma. That’s pretty punk rock.
I’ll miss your Punk Rock HR updates but I understand the need to make a change. Best wishes, Laurie! I’ll look forward to your new updates.
Karl, you rock. Thank you.
Congrats LR, No doubt you are going to be wildly successful. Let me know if there’s anything me or the team at TR can do to support you! Love ya!!!
Amanda, thanks! You’re so supportive. I totally appreciate it!!
Aw… shit. Guess I will have to get back to work.
Good luck in your new venture.
No way. Come waste time on my new site! Yeah!
Don’t worry. Tigers don’t change their stripes.
But…but…but! This website has helped me SOOOOO much! In fact, I just got a new offer today (pending background check) and wanted to thank you and the other people here that post, because everyone’s knowledge has been priceless. :’(
Still, that’s really awesome. I hope you make a zillion dollars and open up a cat shelter as your philanthropy project. You have what? 6? Why stop there?
I’ll continue to read though and contribute when able.
NO WAY.
That is such awesome news. Seriously, congrats!
(PS – I have five. But it’s almost as crazy as 6. There’s not much difference.)
Laurie, sad to see this go but soooo excited to see what’s next on the horizon for you. You rock!
Lisa, thank you! I hope to see you soon!
Good luck with all your future endeavors.. owning your own company is definitely a dream many of us should chase more often.
Thanks, James!!
Laurie,
it’s the end of a glorious era and the beginning of a new and exciting one. Thanks for everything you did, not just the great posts!
Your links are in my reader and I can’t wait for the new things.
Just be careful with your wallet
Love and hugs
Etienne
Thanks, Etienne. You are such a great pal and a great reader. I couldn’t do this site without you!!
Laurie,
Whatever you decide to do next… I’m sure it will be great!
I must say, the “Cats and Treadmills” video site concept sounds very interesting!
Looking forward,
Michael
You have a strategic SEO/kitteh brain, Michael.
Add me to the Laurie Fan Club that will follow your progress and writings wherever you go… I’ve learned a lot from you as a blogger and as a businessperson and I’m looking forward to learning more/watching you and your new ventures grow.
If Punk Rock HR accomplished nothing else, it brought us together – and that makes it all worthwhile! (Because of course, it’s important to look at this situation as to how it affects ME.)
Love you cynical girl!
OMG, you are so right. This blog is about us falling in love.
iloveyoutoo!
Dude – as long as you are still blogging it’s cool.
It’s Punk Rock to retire a Punk Rock blog.
Maybe you can write under your superstar Rap name… MC SKAT CAT!
singing * “2 steps forward 2 steps back… cuz Opposites attract…”
OMFG you did not just quote paula abdul and arsenio hall.
hilarious
I’ve learned a lot from you, thank you Laurie.
thanks, erik!
Well nothing stays the same and change IS good.
Thanks for reminding us about the HUMAN in HR.
Look forward to see your in name in lights.
Best wishes on your new ventures!
Connie
Thanks, connie!
Def enjoyed your blog, but also wishing you much success with your new company!
Cheers,
Christina
Thanks, Christina. Hope you and Sydney are doing well.
You’ve had a great run here that’s given a lot of inspiration, advice, and laughs to everyone that’s read this fantastic blog. And it’s certainly punk rock to go out on your own terms while you’re still on top.
Best of luck with your new company, and needless to say I’m looking forward to your next blogging venture.
Thanks, Tim!!
Laurie, congratulations, and best wishes for a successful new venture! I hope we can still get our annual picture now and then.
Jason
OMG, yes. More than annual, I hope.
That explains the very corporate looking picture I’ve been seeing of you on Twitter &/or Facebook. All my best Laurie – I look forward to seeing you out and about in the HR world still and reading your musings on whatever domain you choose.
Thanks, Leanne. The corporate-looking picture is a Glamor shot for magazines & articles so I don’t look homeless. It came in handy for this shit, though.
Laurie, I just learned about you and Punk Rock HR a few days ago however I’d welcome your edge and expertise over at JobsDirectUSA’s newest addition JobsDirectBlog.com any day. Think about it..
I’ve got a job and a company, Carlos. Thanks for the nice compliment, though.
WTF? I have been processing this all day. I love this blog!
You know what short middle aged black ladies like less than change? Bloggers who don’t follow their dreams!
I considered writing a sappy email, but it seems like you are working it out…all the best in your new venture and if you need anything, holla!
Wait, suddenly I wonder if I’m a middle-aged black lady? How did I not know this about myself?
I am bummed but excited you are off to something new. I would still love to meet up with you. After 20+ years in HR I completely relate to your thoughts. Keep it up, girl!!!
BTW, I’ve been in jury duty since last Tuesday on a case that isn’t worth that amount of time. Can you write a blog post on jury duty? I will be more than happy to share with you my experieince. Let’s pray we start and end deliberations tomorrow.
JURY DUTY? Ugh. Hang in there.
Hi Laurie,
My fridays will never be the same now…
All the best for your new endeavour,
Looking forward th reading you soon!
Benjamin
Fuck that. Your fridays will survive.
Well that just flat out sucks! I have enjoyed reading your blog and look forward to see where you pop up next. I love bacon and spanx and I really think you should think about selling those t-shirts! I’d buy one!
Good luck Lauire!
Oh snap, it doesn’t suck. It will be okay. We’ll still eat bacon and wear spanx.
Laurie,
I have loved and appreciated your work here on PunkRockHR. You have added reason and balance to so many issues. I look forward to your new site and blog!
You are the best!
Thanks so much!
Laurie, you had me at hello and cats – and you know we will follow you anywhere – moving to a biz that includes being the “Voice” of anything is perfect – because you so frequently are the voice – of reason, relevance, and balance. I have been using this video lately to get us all to think about using our voices in ways that make a difference – it reminds me of you.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEBZkWkkdZA
Oh and that new picture is quite fabulous – but you look more like a Fortune 500 CEO than a punk rocker =^..^=
Congratulations! Joni
I love this so much, Joni. Thank you. Also, I’m too old to look anything but wrinkly and professional in my pictures.
Congratulations! New stage.. new way of keeping up with you. BTW, need any help with monkeys I studied them for 5 years or more.. still have many of the books. Already on the newsletter list.
Mike
Wow, I know a monkey expert. Who knew?
Delurking…I’m so excited for you! And about following you where you’re going next. I am not even remotely affiliated with HR, but am inspired by your clarity and no-bullshit style. Best wishes!
LOVE DELURKING.
Thank you.
Dang Laurie,
I was just getting settled in here! But I get it; real rockers leave the party before it winds down. Will check in @ Cynical Girl… Sounds like it’ll have just the right amount of vinegar.
Shoot. I didn’t meant to disrupt our blossoming love affair. Now I need to rethink this. xoxo
yay for you! I’ll miss your blog. The company I work for is HR-focused and I read you for insight into the HR world that didn’t make me want to vomit.
Thank you (and your commentors and guest-bloggers) for showing me some actual Humans in Human Resources. It helped me take what I do more seriously and has made me a more professional professional, even if I still do most of work wearing monkey socks.
u are so awesome.
Can’t say I wasn’t stunned with the news. But you can’t get rid of us that easily. We’ll track you down like a dog – er – cat – wherever you go. Best of luck in your new endeavor. You have so many that are cheering you on – including me!
rats, i wanted to stun you! thanks for all of your thoughtful comments!
forget the lebron-style announcement. i want the punk rock overdose.
good luck, laurie.
f
OMG, my life is an overdose. Thanks, Fran.
Congratulations on the creative destruction, thank you for all of the advice and information, and see you on the other side! Good luck!
Thanks!
I can be your new sorta-kinda-hr blog. http://thecynicalgirl.com
Does this mean no mOre paid gig??
Time ta cut bait and get the F outta here– it’s not the begginning. Of the end — bit the end of the beginning!! Good luck in the next venture –
I’m paid through writing and I launched a company that will make me a gazillionaire. What more do I need???
Thanks, Matty. Couldn’t do this blog w/o your comments.
Personally, we cannot WAIT for the Cats on Treadmills blog to launch.
I live to please Romeo.
Sheesh, I go away for a few days and look what happens!
Laurie, at first I read this and went WTF? But I calmed down enough to read the rest of the post and glad you’ll keep up with the blogging elsewhere, where I will be sure to read your continuing work. Good luck in your new business endeavors, but definitely keep up with the blogging. I’m already looking forward to reading you at your next act. Remember: No matter what else you do, you’ll always be a writer. That means something.
No matter what else you do, you’ll always be a writer. That means something.
That is the nicest and most meaningful way to end this post. Thank you for that. Thanks forever.
