Holiday! Celebrate!

by Laurie on January 2, 2009

It appears that Punk Rock HR readers are taking real vacations and spending time with their real families during the holiday season. Since readership is lacking, I’ll get back to real posts on Monday.

In the meantime, why don’t we put away all this talk about changing Human Resources and dance with Madonna on Solid Gold?

I have three questions.

  1. How ridiculous is Solid Gold? I used to love that show.
  2. Has this song really sucked for over 25 years?
  3. Where do we stand on Madonna’s braids in the video?

Also, dear god, what the hell has happened to Madonna? Sheesh.

It is possible that everyone is out celebrate the month of our birth. While unlikely, it could be. I like that idea more. :)

Solid Gold was ridiculous AND cool. Any show that has had Dionne Warwick AND Rex Smith as hosts can’t be taking itself too seriously.

And at least it was totally obvious that people were lip-syncing then. We knew the bill of goods we were sold and we loved it. Now we have singers who can’t sing not singing but trying to sell it to us as a “live performance.”

I thought the coolest AND most ridiculous element was Darcel, one of the “dancers.” She had long hair (almost Crystal Gayle length) and was always making the same pouty face at the cameras. Made of awesome!

@Mark Middle-age gets the best of us. :(

@HR Maven I think everyone is out shopping for us! Hooray!

@Patrick Thank you, I thought I was the only one who liked lip syncing and metallic unitards paired with interpretive dance. Great minds, Patrick, think alike.

True story: My mom banned the show Solid Gold from our house because, as she put it, me & my bro and sis “got too crazy” when it was on.

Laurie January 3, 2009 at 12:18 am

@Jenn SHUT. UP.

HRUnderling January 3, 2009 at 5:39 am

We are kindred Wenchie, my home was also banneded from Solid Gold and it’s lustful dancers! But as a resourceful youthn, we of course found another household to watch it at who had parents who weren’t so lame!
My favorite part of Solid Gold was when the danceres ended their dance and all froze in various poses and made those “pouty faces”.
I also was a watcher of Soul Train, and American Bandstand, how that was some good stuff! Shows like that spawned great movies like “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun!”.

I just realized the spelling and grammar in my comment is horrendous. Forgive me, it is 5:30am…

Laurie January 3, 2009 at 3:42 pm

@HRU No problem on the grammar and I’m laughing because we need a solid gold fan club. I’m going to look for a fan page on Facebook.

1. Ridiculous to the same degree that it is awesome–that is, extremely. I am so glad my mom didn’t crack down on the craziness the way Jenn’s did, because I loved this show so much. On occasion we used to discuss it at elementary school the following day.

2. I would not characterize the song as sucking but I have bad taste in music. I refuse to consider its 25-year existence.

3. I am 100% in favor.

If you find a Solid Gold fan page on Facebook, you MUST report back. I can’t find one.

Did you know that I was once a Soul Train Dancer? Ok so I wasn’t. But I could have been. In my mind.

“Holiday” is the best song of all time, with the possible exception of “West End Girls”. Madonna rules and always will. Don’t hate.

Also, I am practicing the Beyonce “Single Girls” dance and will post my Youtube video parody soon.

Laurie January 4, 2009 at 1:46 pm

@SCG I’m in favor of the braids, too.

@Sharkie I used to watch Soul Train in the 80s on Saturday afternoons on WGN in Chicago — before it was a super-station. I loved that show. You’re right about Madonna. I’m not hating. I just wish she would appreciate her own awesomeness. It’s like Oprah. Why are you dieting? You have everything. Eat and enjoy food.
