HR Technology Conference: What’s This All About?

by Laurie on September 26, 2009

I am attending the HR Technology Conference in Chicago, this week, because I enjoy thinking about technology and how it intersects the concept of work. Oh yeah, and

  • because I am lame.
  • because I am geeky.
  • because there is a ton of money in this industry and I fear it’s going to the wrong people and the wrong companies.

There are investors, pundits and vendors who make big money from selling ideas, software solutions, and technology platforms that are touted as the best way you can manage your workforce, create a better employee experience, and reduce labor costs.

If only they could write some code and monetize your soul, they would.

So I think this industry benefits from a cynical girl like me. I like money, hate the status quo, and I’ve worked in the real world as a recruiter, a Generalist, and a Human Resources leader. I don’t like shitty jobs, and I don’t like companies who use technology to cover up for the fact that they run soulless, stupid corporations.

Here’s my agenda: I plan on learning from the best, stalking the gurus, and getting close to the vendors and businesses who think they have the answers. When the conference is over, I will support those vendors and businesses who are doing cool things and making work better. The others? They can go fly a kite.

In the meantime, I hope to continue my mission to strengthen the HR/Social Media community. We get smarter and better by spending time together. If you’re attending HR Tech, make sure you get on the invite list for the parties. I’m modifying the events as they come onto my calendar so check back often!

See you in Chicago, suckers.

So agree! Can’t wait to see you this week and make sure you come check out my booth (535) – I swear we won’t suck out your soul. Believe it or not we actually think software shouldn’t suck. (Amazing concept I know!)

Love it. I think I have been repeating a mantra since about 1999 or so when we first got sucked into the myth that was an LMS: a system will not solve your problems. I’ll be out of town while you are here this time, so hope to catch you in November.

But I like flying kites. Sigh.

Look forward to meeting you and all the other smart HR/Social media folk at HR Tech! That’s who make work better – the people. Gadgetry and techno-spangle software make things faster, more efficient (sometimes) and yes, prettier (like Yul Brynner in Westworld or Katherine Ross in The Stepford Wives).

I’m in Chicago, but not attending. Please report back on stuff that really makes work better. I’ve spent over half my career working on technology my companies have purchased that never seem to produce the results they promise (I’m looking at you ADP/PeopleSoft/Oracle/Ceridian/insert name of must-have software here). I don’t want to have to deal with consultants for years during AND after implementation or make the entire organization (nevermind my department) suffer once it is in place!

@Sarah How can I resist seeing you??

@Kristy Yes! Are you coming to my party in November? http://failspectacularly.com

@Kevin The only software that makes life prettier is Photoshop. Everything else just sucks! :)

@Megan I never went through a software implementation that didn’t cause one of my coworkers to become an alcoholic. I’m looking at you Peoplesoft, SAP and Lawson.

@Vanessa Meh, maybe. Why do I want my own Video Job Interview website? Why would I want video job ads when I can post something on Craig’s List?

I don’t have a booth or really anything to say about HR, but if I don’t get to see you?

@ Megan You can get a free pass to the Expo only by registering online today or Tuesday morning http://www.HRTechnologyConference.com

@Laure So glad we arranged to let you in when you hate everything the conference stands for! Look forward to what you blog *after*. A little more knowledge can be so dangerous. Great to see someone publish the party list.

@Bill I’m 100% sure the conference doesn’t stand for mediocrity. :) That’s why i want to attend — and I’m going to attach myself like a vacuum to the good stuff. The bad stuff? Fuck ‘em, not worth the print space.

Regretabbly, I am not going to make it because of external forces working against me! Find some good shit and write about it.
