This question comes from my adorable friend, Erica, who has a huge smile but no health care coverage.
Do you have any expertise in the area of non-employer benefits? By that I mean I will never have a full-time job (or so it seems), so I really need to start thinking about purchasing my own health and dental benefits through an independent company.
If you have any company names or even Web sites that might help me research and compare prices and plans, I would surely appreciate it.
Are the awesome readers of Punk Rock HR able to help Erica with connections or resources? We would appreciate your thoughts.

Look into Blue Cross Blue Shield. They have several health plans for individuals. The plans vary in terms of coverage, cost, deductibles. It’s more expensive than if you got it through an employer but it’s not unreasonable.
Blue Cross has individual plans, also check out associations you either belong to or are contemplating, they sometimes have plans (might be worth joining to get benefit). Also check with local insurance agents, many sell what are refered to as catastophic care plans, high deductible and hospitalization only…good for a gap in employment, alot of college grads take as they come off parental coverage, premiums are reasonable because there is an offset of generally healthy 20 somethings….wont cover a doctor visit, but protects you for big $ or emergencies.
good luck!
Thanks, guys!
Just wanted to thank Ms. Laurie for posting my question about benefits and those who responded! As soon as I get a little more on solid ground, I’ll definitely be looking into Blue Cross Blue Shield plans.
