Today I am having a heart attack and an anxiety attack about unemployment, my hair color, and returning to the world of Human Resources.
I’m not a dreamer, but I do have this crazy fantasy where I never have to listen to people complain about their supervisors again. In this dream, I never complain about my supervisor, either. Everyone has a good office, no one has a performance review, and peace reigns from the heavens.
Call me crazy, but this world exists in my heart. A world where dress codes include pajamas and sweater dresses. A world where dogs & people come to work in an office with a fancy espresso machine and a dog-treat bar.

Indeed, you are NOT the only one!!!
Before I started my current job (a few years back) I had been unemployed for 8 months. I had major anxiety about unemployment, my “skills”, and starting a new position. When I finally did secure a position I called my mom the morning of the first day (before going in) and said “I don’t think I can do this” and sort of freaked out.
Well, I got through it. First day was horrible. Second day was slightly less horrible. By the end of the first week I was saying to myself “Ok I think I can do this. I’m pretty sure I know what I’m doing and won’t die from this”.
Pretty soon I was tacking up my Napoleon Dynamite calendar and trying not to laugh while counseling clueless managers.
It gets better. I promise.
Have you ever entertained the idea of being a Wal-Mart greeter? You’re definitely not old enough, but you would exist just to say “Hello” to everyone.
The pajama dress code is your reality. What’s a sweater dress?
You’re definitely not the only one.
hrWench – Who knew it was so expensive to be both blonde & fabulous? I can’t fathom the idea of going back to work with the whole “ideating” & “innovating” bullshit that comes with Corporate America. Maybe it will help if I buy a Napoleon Dynamite calendar.
Jesse – I don’t do Wal-Mart, but I’m thinking about Target Security Guard. Could you see me arresting shoplifters? I’m such a sucker — I would let them all go with a warning.
I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair…..
I presided over a conversation from an earnest HR professional who had been asked to introduce a policy to stop people colouring their hair – see below – be afraid, be very afraid!!
Peter
My organisation are considering adding hair colour to the dress code i.e. pink, blue or unnatural colours not allowed. I am worried this may be a breach of Human Rights, does anyone else have a similar policy or know if this could be an issues with Human Rights?
Thanks
Fiona
You should have seen the replies, which ranged from outrage for even considering such a move to ‘bloody good job – it’s about time we got rid of such people and shot them’
Ahem!
Peter – We don’t recognize Human Rights in America, thus complicating my return to work. xxxooo
