Shut Up and Sing, Tim McGraw

by Laurie on August 5, 2007

You think your job is tough? So does Tim McGraw. (Let me pull out the world’s tiniest fiddle and banjo — to be accompanied by Nelly, of course.)

Stop me if you think that you’ve heard this one before, but the worst kind of celebrities are the ones who whine. Celebrities have one job: to entertain. The job doesn’t involve dead animal parts, it isn’t rocket science, and it pays more than minimum wage. I know there are hazards when it comes to being a celebrity, but I think Tim McGraw’s worst day at work is better than my best day at work.

So it really irked me to watch YouTube videos of Faith Hill & Tim McGraw complaining about their adoring fans. When Faith Hill warned the crowd not to touch her husband’s balls at a recent concert, I was beyond irritated. If I shell out $200 for front row seats to a Tim McGraw concert, plus $10 parking, plus $20 for beer, I might touch more than his balls.

Now let me take a step back: I’m not a fan of country music, but I do admire Faith Hill and Tim McGraw for their progressive political perspectives. They are strong, liberal voices in a world filled with too much Kenny Chesney (“I’m Not Gay!“) and Toby Keith (who considers himself to be a Democrat, funny enough).

I just don’t understand how Mr. & Mrs. McGraw can be surprised by the reaction of the fans. When you walk into a crowd wearing tight pants, you shouldn’t surprised if you are touched. Welcome to the world of being good looking in the workforce, Tim McGraw. You think your day was bad? I once had a leader at a Fortune 500 company tell me that he loves me and give me a too-long hug. Then he asked me if I wanted to have an affair. I told him that he could stand in line behind George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and every other man alive. (Not to mention my husband.)

I’m not saying that touching Tim McGraw’s balls is right, and I think it’s inappropriate to steal his wedding ring. Faith Hill is very much right on principle; however, if I wore a leather vest and leather pants to work, I wouldn’t get much sympathy if a fellow co-worker grabbed me in an inappropriate place. Also, I might be written up for violating myriad fashion rules.

So this is my advice to Tim & Faith: keep touring, keep fighting the good fight, but stand 10 ft away from your fans like normal celebrities do!

first let me say that i never respond to blogs…..first time for everything.

your views are interesting to say the least. i agree…..it’s not right to touch tim’s private parts and nothing he wears or doesn’t wear will ever make it right nor……should he expect it to happen. i agree……he wears tight pants and has some sexy pelvis action in his show and…….the man is hot! in addition……..the tight leather pants he was wearing left very little to the imagination but that should not encourage a person with a shred of moral decency to grope him. faith’s reaction was that of a ‘wife’ and i’m impressed that she didn’t jump off the stage and tackle the ‘groper’ to the ground……i just might have done that if someone did that to my husband.

lots of celebrities don’t mind being touched…….they make that obvious. tim is not one of those people. he has no problems with handshakes and an occassion hug but that’s about it. last summer i stood right next to a woman that (when tim walked by) reached out and kissed him on the lips……security got to her immediately and told her that was disrespectful to his wife who was watching and unacceptable. also……last summer, fans reached up and grabbed his butt/crotch area and he turned and waved the ‘no-no’ finger at them. another time he sat down on the edge of a stage too close to the steps and some women started climbing up his leg and he freaked out and couldn’t back up fast enough……all this while trying to sing and remember the lyrics. so i think i can confidently say that tim does nothing to encourage that disrespectful behavior.

one reason people love tim is because he gets close to his fans. on this tour tim came off the stage to greet/shake hands/ hug the fans in the front few rows…….why?????? because he realizes that they may have paid hundreds of dollars for their seat. the ‘groper’ didn’t do this on impulse…….it was well planned and almost a ‘copykat’ crime. the same thing happened in jacksonville a few days earlier when tim & faith were leaving the arena.

i also admire tim for his political views……..i was in louisiana, his hometown to be exact, when he announced he was a democrat……he got booed by 20,000 people at a charity event ( i was cheering-lol)…..he said “i guess i’m done here” and turned to leave the stage…….(he had not performed yet)……of course people started cheering at that point but i thought it was quite brave of him to make that announcement in his right-wing, conservative, bible-belt neighborhood.

i’m sure you can tell that i’m a bit biased when it comes to tim & faith. i’ve had the pleasure of meeting them several times and can say without a shadow of a doubt……they are some of the best human beings to grace this planet. they are not without fault of course but i truly don’t believe tim deserved to be treated so poorly by a supposed fan.

take care

I don’t usually respond, but I had to reply to this one. It’s NEVER right to touch someone in the privates!!! I don’t care what they wear or how close they are standing!! That’s like saying it’s ok to touch a women in the boobs just because she is wearing a tight revealing shirt. Shame on you for your post. I commend Faith for standing up, and letting fans know that her husbands privates are off limits. That’s her job…not her fans !!! You payed for seeing a concert not inappropriately touching the main act. I hope you never get a front row seat!!!
