Sunday Shout Out: Renegade Props

by Laurie on August 9, 2009

hrhandbook 150x150 Sunday Shout Out: Renegade PropsDudes, what a week. Does anyone have good news? Did you hire someone? Find a job? Win the lottery? Give a killer presentation? I need to read something positive. Leave a comment and I’ll pick someone to win a copy of The Essential HR Handbook.

It’s essential, people. (Thanks to Sharon Armstrong for sending it to me.)

Here are my weekly shout outs, by the way.

Most importantly, Renegade HR and I did a podcast on the future of Human Resources. I really think Chris is an up & coming star in the world of Human Resources. I am a dork, but he has some thoughtful and smart insights on why HR Generalists are still relevant. Listen here.

ok so I will brag for once: I was informed yesterday that I am one of Long Island’s 50 around 50, by Long Island Business News ( I am actually a couple of years under the bar, they awarded to those over 40 and under 60yrs of age – A babyboomer award!). That makes 3 awards since 07…a trifecta to go with my 2 national SHRM awards (now I am really bragging)…Do awards really matter…we can debate that for ever (but not today)…do I feel really good today…YES…

This week was a good week:

1) Received an A in my second to last course in my HR masters program (one more course to go -Yippee!)

2) Got called back for a second interview for a job

3) Applied to three other jobs that look promising

Life feels good!!!!

I made offers to three people Friday, all accepted. I still have 15 left to fill before 9/1, I’m going to be busy but thankful we’re hiring.

And most importantly, the 3rd was my birthday so my week started off with a bang :)

I’m an employment counselor that works with people who have been laid off and are receiving unemployment benefits, and I love helping people take the next step in their career path. It’s hard work, but I like it.

This week I sent out an email to my clients with a link to the post you had up about Job Search Resources and Sites. I love that kind of stuff to send out to clients, it makes my work a little easier.

The week started with an urgent vet visit. My puppy, Zeus OS, was in the grips of a surging outbreak of hot spots. Lesson learned, never neglect a small thing. He tolerated the face shaving quite well – vet was impressed, most dogs his size have to be sedated for becoming snarly. ZOS sat there with quiet dignity. He is better now, beyond on the mend.

At work, successfully challenged an OSHA violation via informal conference. Rewrote affected policy and developed lesson plans for delivery starting tomorrow.

Oh, and I read three great books. P.J. O’Rourke’s On The Wealth of Nations; A Whole New Mind by Daniel H. Pink; and The Art of Racing In The Rain by Garth Stein. All three affirmative readings.

I received a great annual performance review! I also finally signed up for a PHR review course and exam (which I have been meaning to do forever). I’ll have that out of the way by the end of December. Phew!

RANDOM.org generated the #4 so that means LIZ is the winner.

Liz, can you send me your address to yo@punkrockHR.com? I will mail the book!

@Mark Whoo hoo!

@Bits Oh, life is awesome for you.

@adowling You are so great. What a birthday week!

@Liz Thanks for the compliment about your week. You won without the compliment, but I appreciate it.

@RMS Oh no, ZOS!! I’m glad your puppy is getting better. Holy smokes.

@Megan Great news. Great news. Great news. Let’s keep the optimism up until December so you can pass.

@Alexis Whoa, that is very good news. Hope the baby is good, too! :)

Shoot, I missed the cutoff for the win, but I will share anyway: I STARTED A JOB THIS WEEK!! Hell yes, I’m shouting that. I haven’t worked since December ’08, and even made a bold move from Seattle to Houston (and back) to try a ‘better’ job market. Not only did I start a job (contract for now, but let’s not split hairs) but the whole thing happened fast. 3 weeks from initial networking (yes, got this job because I am an aggressive networker and LinkedIn junkie) to offer. Wahoo!

I wish I had known about this blog through my unemployment – not only because it’s f-ing hilarious, but I’m also in HR and I can identify! My favorite part of this site is the Handbook. May I frame it for my office? :)

I will stay tuned for more funny posts & anecdotes from a fellow anti-establishment HR mind (thank god), please keep them coming.

I also hired a new employee last week. A stay at home mom returning to work when her son goes to Kindergarten. It felt sooo good to put on that recruiting hat again!

I received a verbal job offer.(Fingers crossed.) But that’s not the best part. That would be the reaction of my University Career Services representative, who gave me a big hug when I got back to tell her about it. She was visibly excited and said that she hoped it meant that the Fall recruiting season would be good for the others graduating!
