This is the last Sunday in 2009 if I’m doing the math right. Is there anyone or anything you want to recognize?
I had a conversation with a HR friend, this weekend, and we debated who has it tougher: job seekers or women who fall in love with divorced dads.
- Job seekers are tough, jaded, and fear the worst. They are cranky and automatically dismiss advice because they’ve heard it all before. Many are depressed and annoyed during the holiday season. They’re hoping 2010 is better but they don’t want to be too optimistic. Job seekers are the ultimate buzz-kill at a party. I feel for them.
- Divorced dads are also jaded and they definitely assume the worst. They don’t want to commit too quickly and it’s easier to get an audience with the Pope than it is to meet their kids. Don’t get a divorced dad talking about his child support payments, and never ask him if he’s going to remarry. Sheesh. I feel sorry for the divorced dads, but I kind of feel sorry for the women who love them. Just go adopt a dog.
I kid, I kid. I just love the fact that this blog has introduced me to people in the HR community who can talk about random stuff like job seekers, career advice, and the plight of divorced dads and the women who love them. So shout-outs to everyone out there & give me your list of people to recognize.
It’s your last chance in 2009!

I’m working on a 2009.50 item list for my personal blog. I’m up to 22 right now. #1 – the first thing that came to mind – was presenting at the Maine HR Convention. A baby step forward into greater confidence that is now making other things more possible. This led to #14 on the list – attending the SHRM Leadership Confidence.
Not on the list and wish it wasn’t in my mind: The 17% RIF last month. It’s a memory never to be forgotten – going on as #23.
I’m still concerned about the displaced New Orleans strippers during Katrina. Now there’s a group whose had it rough.
Happy Holidays!
Let’s recognize my mailman Jim- he delivers the mail- the kids love him, the dogs love him, he aims to please. Over the years mail has shifted to bills, and junk and once a year holiday cards, as most people are online now- and yet, Jim still delivers every day and our neighborhood loves him. He take letters to Santa, and he writes back as Santa. He engages with the kids, and he is an all around fixture here. When I grew-up in Chicago, we had the same mailman Bill for 18 years- he may still be there- he let me walk with him and put the letters in the mail box- he sang and was
a great guy- so my shout out goes to our Mailman Jim!
I should totally adopt a dog, except, my cats would probably eat it.
Shout outs to all the people that didn’t hire me this year! I’m still enjoying sleeping in til noon!
@RMS I see numbers that sort of look like math in your comment. I’m with you — let’s forget that 17%.
@David You have some heartfelt concerns there, buddy.
@Debbie I love my mailman. He’s a contractor and doesn’t like to make eye contact with people, but I always say hi to him. I pretend like he appreciates it. His job is not easy.
@Jenn Exactly. You need more feral cats, though.
@Joseph You are so very lucky.
People that should be recognized and who deserve a shout out…
The people at my local Vons grocery store. It is the crappiest one in the neighborhood but the people are so nice even through the the overdue remodel.
My recruiter who always aims to make me look good.
Our gardener who always cleans up the dog poop and rakes the tons of leaves from the neighbor’s trees.
The women I know (and don’t know) fighting and recovering from breast cancer.
The awesome neighborhood I live in.
The day spa I go to to look beautiful…as my daugher told my husband, it is expensive to have good skin…and
My Family and Myself!
@Ginger Wow, you are one lucky lady! Good list of folks. All deserving.
Although, before I was married recently (and well into my 30’s), I found that a man who had not ever been married hadn’t been so for a REASON!
I love a divorced dad, and he proposed to me on Christmas Eve!!
Now on to a list of deserving folks…
- The lady in my office who does a myriad of tasks, but rarely gets credit. I am not even sure what her title is, but Dianne is always rocking away doing something very important to our day-to-day survival
- My fiancee, who gets up every morning (unless he is physically ill) to walk the dog, so I can stay in bed for another 30 minutes
- The chick who took our tickets at the movie theater last night. There were swarms of people, and for some reason…they were all asking her questions (where is…how many people are going to see this….can I change movies?) and she answered what she could with a smile. Customer service is alive!
the guys at United Shoe Repair in Arlington, MA. Let’s face it, not the sexiest profession and it can be a thankless job. These guys have manners, do incredible work (I mean, it’s like i have 4 new pairs of funky boots!) and they are just cool guys from Africa who speak English, Spanish and French and are happy. I love them.
Yup…I’d like to recognize all of my former employers (3 in 20 years) though I don’t name call. I took great knowledge from some. And the others…well, Andrew Dice Clay said it best, Here’s to you…
