Sunday Shout-Out: The Conference Board

by Laurie on December 13, 2009

My weekly shout-out goes to The Conference Board. I’m thankful they invited me to attend the Senior HR Executive Conference.

I’m tough on the function of Human Resources because I know it can do better. It was refreshing to spend time with 100 people who feel the same way and are doing something about it.

Furthermore, it was an honor to attend in my capacity as both a columnist for The Conference Board Review and as a blogger. Some people feel that it’s risky to invite bloggers and tweeters to an event. Many organizations and associations are in the embryonic stage when it comes to developing social media strategies. I do believe The Conference Board understands the power of social media, and I look forward to watching how they employ technology to enhance the delivery of important messages and information.

Finally, I wanted to thank Steve Boese, Trish McFarlane, and Frank Roche for attending the conference with me. I couldn’t have asked for three better friends and colleagues to represent HR + social media in action. They’ve written great overviews of the conference, too, so please check out their blogs.

Okay, who’s on your list? Who do you want to recognize, this week?

In a completely random move, I have to recognize the DMV on Mill Road in Milwaukee.

I needed a new driver’s license. Do you know how long it took to get one there? Seven minutes. SEVEN MINUTES. Including the part where I put on some lipstick for the photo (a futile move, as it turns out…but still).

Sure, it was an hour before a major blizzard hit, so nobody was out except me. But still. SEVEN MINUTES.

Thank you, lady at Window 5. You rock.

I also want to say thanks to the great people at the Conference Board for the opportunity to attend the event. It was a true honor, and was made even better with the presence of yourself, Trish, and Frank.

Also, a big shout-out to Rafael, one of the bellmen at the DoubleTree for hooking me up with a sweet ride back to the airport on what was a cold, miserable day in NYC.

I want to give a shout to Lands End for putting their sweater fleece on sale for 50% off. Fleecy on the inside, looks like a sweater on the outside, and I take every opportunity I can to wear fleece undercover when I’m expected to dress better. I fangirl you, Lands End, especially since your sizing allow me to wear a small.

Also mad props to my husband who’s cleaning the kitchen as I sit here eating crackers & Trader Joe’s pub cheese. Which reminds me, thank you Trader Joe’s for making sure we don’t starve to death. Your freezer section is our personal chef.

I’d like to give a shout-out to the Clinical Director at the mental health agency where I work part-time. Times are always tough at non-profit MH agencies, but they are really tough now, with funding cut-backs and increased expectations. It is not easy to find ways to balance client needs with the funding limitations.

Our Clinical Director gives it her best, and although you can never do everything you should in this biz, I think she does as good as anyone could. She also seems to find ways to be fair while dealing with some very talented yet strong-willed team members, not the least of which is me.

This is not a suck-up moment, because that’s not my style. I really have admiration for this woman. That is saying something, considering the fact that you don’t find many MH professionals who challenge their leadership more than me. :)

Not sure he’ll ever know, but Sandeep Singh, from People to People in India, has been an awesome national guide and logistics manager for our SHRM delegation in India. A Sikh, with a calm and respectful demeanor, he’s kept us collected (21 HR folks who never want to leave any of our stops) we didn’t lose anyone at any time!, fed, on time (well, on Indian Standard Time), and well cared for. He even got our fabulous hotel, The Trident Bandra Kurla in Mumbai, to extend our rooms till 7:00 pm tonight. A true magician. He has a hard job and he did it with grace, professionalism, calmness and a wonderful sense of humor. Sandeep, you are the best!

My Sunday shout out on Monday goes to my boss for being a leader this week. During my two years at my Company, he’s gone from trying to be a leader to a real leader. He’s accepted feedback and grown personally and professionally. I’m so proud of him (but not in a HR-mom sort of way).
