Sunday Shout Out: HREvolution

by Laurie on November 8, 2009

Holy crap. That is all I am going to say about my trip to Louisville to attend a fancy little unconference called HRevolution.

Okay, fine, I’ll say more. The event was coordinated by Crystal Peterson, Trish McFarlane, Steve Boese, and Ben Eubanks — and it rocked. Good conversation about existential issues in HR, lots of geeky blogging talk, and a heated discussion about the future of Human Resources. I paid for my attendance out of pocket, so I was focused on meeting new people and learning cool things.

Mission accomplished.

I’ll say this much.

  • I am officially the Debbiest Downer of the group, which is tough in a room of HR professionals.  Not every job in HR is meant to be strategic and awesome. Just because you do tactical work doesn’t mean that you’re not an influencer and don’t make an impact. You get a paycheck. Be happy.
  • I also used the word bifurcate to akaBruno‘s amusement.
  • I also saw a bride at a karaoke bar. It’s Kentucky. Anything is possible.

Glad I went, glad I spent some money on my personal development, and glad that we have such an amazing community that’s developed over the past two years. Remember when I had a website called HR Bloggers and people were like HR what? HR blogs? Are you kidding me?

They laughed.

Look who’s laughing now.

Great to see so many investing in their own development. Great to see you there!

Not only was she there, but she sang. Awkward altogether. Glad to see you, hun. And we’ll be talking. I have a junkyard to build. :)

Great to hear your thoughts on HRevolution, Laurie. Had really hoped to meet you and many others there whom I’ve gotten to know through Twitter, but I’m afraid it was truly an “unconference” for me! I’ll try again next year though, and am delighted to hear it was such a great success. Trish, Steve, Ben, and Crystal did a great job making it happen, and I learned a lot by following the various tweets throughout. All the best!

Of all the things I have missed this last 4 weeks, this is the one that killed me. Glad to hear it was awesome!

I am still “processing” the day’s events but I am so happy that I took this opportunity. I learned new things and feel energized. I was also very happy to meet you in person.

Thanks for the shout out Laurie! So glad you were at HRevolution. You always help by throwing out the challenging questions. I’m still trying to wrap my head around all the conversations there. We are lucky to know so many great HR pros. After Fail spectacularly planning for you and HRevolution planning for me, I say we deserve spa days.

Oh, my new domain name is http://hrringleader.com. :-)

I would have been disappointed if “bifurcate” was NOT part of today’s post!

Your first bullet point was my biggest take-away (a phrase which I actually despise but I am too tired to think of another right now) of the entire conference. Now if I can only get a effen paycheck, I will be happy.

You’re amazing.

@Lorne Thanks for your kind words!

@Michael Naw, you’re supposed to be torn up over #fail!

It was awesome to get to see you again, Laurie. Debbie Downer you are not!! Try thought provoking and real — HRevolution wouldn’t have been the same without your insights.

I lived in Kentucky for a while– check the brides ID.

…and there’s no way you could be a downer.

Laurie-If every HR job isn’t strategic, how can we all get seats at the table? :<)

It was great to see you, I hope you consider it money well spent (I know I do). Cheers-FZ

Laurie,

I had a great time with you. The bride we saw at the karaoke bar that night with you was out the night before at a dueling piano bar for her bachelorette party.
We love your honesty and senticism. It’s what makes you, you.
