Today’s shout out is for Jessica Miller-Merrell, a Human Resources professional who just published her first book called Tweet This! Twitter for Business.
That’s right. While some HR people are content to sit on their butts and eat donuts, Jessica is out there writing a book about social media, twitter, and recruiting strategies. I met Jessica in Toronto, last year, and she is amazing. Lots of energy, sharp mind, and very passionate about recruiting & HR.
This is a side note, but she’s also very fun. I don’t say this lightly. We had a fun night at Recruitfest09.
Want to win a copy of her book? Leave a comment and recognize someone, and I’ll do a drawing!

Might like to have that book, and seeing as though it is 2pm and I have the first comment, my chances might be good!
I am going to give a shout out to someone I won’t name, but it is the idea that counts here really. I will also give a shout out to someone I will name.
Last week I made a post on my blog about needing help with some of my weaker areas in business. As a creative person, I am really weak on the nuts and bolts of developing and running a business. I have chosen to go into self employment, though, so I need to deal with this. I posted the blog post in some Linked-In groups and in other social media spheres.
I got lots of helpful responses. One was from Amanda Hite from Talent Revolution. As busy as she is, she gave me an hour on the phone and gave me some very inspiring as well as concrete suggestions. Thx Amanda!!!
The other person was in one of my LinkedIn groups. She made contact with me, and has since been working tirelessly on helping me develop an idea for my artwork that I had never considered. Although she is in a completely different state than I am in, she has found some local resources for me and sent other tips and ideas my way. And she has asked for nothing in return.
I am very grateful to Amanda and this other woman. I do not know if I will ever be able to pay them back, but rest assured, the favors will one day be paid forward to someone else in need.
A shout out to you, too, Laurie, because without you, I would have never connected with these two fabulous people!
I’d like to recognize Steve Browne (@sbrowehr) for being a super passionate HR person who, although very busy with his “real” job, gives a ton of his time to both HR professionals and people who are in job search. Steve advocates for the HR profession by being active in his local HR chapter, facilitating a monthly HR Roundtable attended by over 100 people and speaking to groups and associations all over Ohio and beyond. He’s a fun person who helps individuals and business leaders see that HR can be a business partner, have fun and be radical. Steve’s been a friend and supporter of me for more years than I can count, for which I’m very grateful!
I’d also like to give a shout out to you Laurie. I love you (wo)man! You’re also someone who’s supportive and helpful behind the scenes and I really appreciate that.
I struggle with keeping up with the requests made of me sometimes and I know that both you and Steve get so many more and manage to do it well. Kudos to you both!
And I’m not sucking up here – but if it helps me win a free copy of the book, then I’m ok with that.
Proofreading is a talent I don’t possess – Steve is @sbrownehr on Twitter.
Wait, does this count as a second entry for the book? Sweet!
I am going to give a shout out to Ben Eubanks. Ben was the first person to talk back to me on Twitter and he made me feel welcome in the community – when I had no idea what I was doing. Ben is very generous with his time, he is a bundle of energy, and is a wonderful person that I am very fortunate to know and have met this hear at HRevolution. I would love to read Jessica’s book and am so proud of her for getting published! Congratulations- please let me know if you come to ATL for a book event!
hey if the 513 can enter twice to correct spelling than so can I- (year not hear)- and ps- Jennifer has already won a contest this month- and Atlanta has not won anything this month as we continue our fundraising focus.
@BZ Amanda is awesome and for that shout-out, you win.
@Jennifer Ooooh. Steve is awesome, too. Why don’t you ask Jessica for a copy of the book so you can raffle it off to Debbie!
@Debbie I’m going to read the Crocodile book you just finished. My next book is Fun with Problems by Robert Stone. Will keep you posted. Just finished HUGE and I am a Genius of Unspeakable Evil and I Want to be Your Class President. Both were cute.
I like donuts! (about once a month)
I’d like to recognize @AliciaSAnera for being kind and supportive ALL the time!
I’d also like to thank the Academy, but they have never given me anything yet, so eff them!
ok Laurie, well if I don’t win the book, it is nice to know that someone read my blog
Have a great week!
XO
I meet so many awesome people through you, Laurie! Thanks for the book, and Debbie, where is your blog? I will read it too!
I’d like to call out two…Ron Steinbrink, from whom I learned everything that I would NEVER aspire to be. And, to Glenn Love. Glenn was my superior, later my peer and ultimately my report. But, he was my wingman when it was tough, my mentor early in my development and just a really great person.
@Michael If donuts are wrong, I don’t want to be right. Also, good shout outs.
@High Priest Perfect. Good shout outs.
Shout out to Darin and Lisa McClure, self proclaimed wonks, who gave me birth into this world of social media. Darin, who used to bend neon for a living from his totally rad apartment with a beach view in San Clemente has been listening, learning and helping in conversational media since inception. Darin taught me about Twitter, blogging, Google Docs and a million other things. Like my little girls’ surf instructor who tells the children to sit on the sand for 20 minutes and watch the surf before diving in, Darin taught me to listen first.
Lisa, the gorgeous and tall librarian Roxy girl type who previously trained and mananged Braille writing inmates, took my company’s website from a few totally lame PDF files pasted together to a revolutionary interactive conversational website never before seen in the satffing industry. Lisa adds content, tracks anyalytics and keeps up with our insessant inundation of featured jobs, candidate streams and commentaries. Darin and Lisa take calls from me and our team all day long. We harrass them via Twitter, Facebook, IM, text, telephone and sometimes I drive down the coast from Malibu and plop down on their enormous brown ultra suede bean bag which sits in the middle of their small living room enclosed in glass and surrounded by pcs, macs, net books, iphones and a WII, and snuggle their Jack Russell terrior named Pretty while they beam about their toys, take their little girl to piano lessons, check the surf and blow my mind with their latest connections, ideas and findings.
And there’s more! Darin and Lisa are really into non-profits. They especially lean towards Surfrider and the Braille Institute and they support other peoples causes. They are foodies, good friends and overall amazing influences and supportive players in this field.
Thanks for the shout out, Debbie.
I’m thrilled to have met you, too.
And Jessica rocks. I’ve been reading her book and really like the 30 minute plan for Twitter. Keeps it in perspective.
@BZ Wow, thanks for the SO Vicki. I really appreciate it! Mine is to you for your courage and your efforts. Your follow up email really impressed me.
@Laurie I love your idea’s and how you rule the world of HR
