Thanksgiving: Things I'm Not Thankful For…

by Laurie on November 26, 2009

I recorded this video on Tuesday and Jon Stewart did a segment on things he’s not thankful for on Tuesday night.

Crap.

Great minds think alike, although his is much better.

He’s not thankful for Goldman Sachs. I’m not thankful for roadkill, homelessness, and H1N1. Also add the war in Iraq & Afghanistan, herpes in cats, and the short battery life on my MacBook.

Can you believe I do these videos in one take? Just like my idol, by the way.

What’s on your NOT THANKFUL FOR list?

I was going to disagree with you on the original reason for Thanksgiving, but I’m too lazy. Plus, I’ve been up since 3am (not cooking, but mostly being pissed off about things that haven’t happened yet today but probably will), so I’m cranky. And lazy. Also, I have to wait for the cable guy…because, yeah. Our cable went out yesterday. This was after the vacuum cleaner broke (before 15 people came over), but before my blog broke (so I can’t even thank my readers, because my blog is broken). So I’m not feeling really all that thank-y today, even though I know these are all first world problems and I’m an asshole for having an attitude about them.

So. Anyway. I’m mostly just commenting to tell you that your hair looks really cute.

My favorite part of video #2 is watching Mario Lopez try not to break out in hysterical laughter from her answer.

I’m thankful to have found you on twitter and get to read your silly blogs that make me laugh.

Happy Sticking-it-to-the-man…Thanksgiving!

Your hair IS very cute in that video! Sickness can do that for you.

Some things I’m *not* thankful for:

- When people (or your favorite pets) die, they don’t come to Thanksgiving dinner any more, nor do they help cook or clean up after – it’s all just you at that point…

- I’m not thankful that the economy is still so bad and so many people are still out of work/ underemployed – don’t the holidays suck enough already?

- I’m not thankful that even though I need to pick up just a few things this weekend, to avoid the trampling deaths which are imminent (they call it Black Friday for a reason – the Black Death…), I must avoid all malls/ stores for the next few days, but what about MY needs, hmmm?

- I’m not thankful that Xmas music started before Halloween and will last until after New Year’s – can we not dispense with trying to push people over the edge with all the Xmas music???

Enjoy your mashed taters today-o!

I’m not thankful for the cold virus, because my babies have it.

I’m not thankful for separated shoulder injuries, because I have one. Wait. I might be a little thankful for it because right now my husband is cleaning the kitchen and I’m barely gonna hafta cook anything this year.

I’m not thankful for my camera’s low-res setting; it somehow got set to it last June when I took the most awesome picture of my family.

I’m not sure I’m grateful I read your 2007 Thanksgiving blog post. Well, maybe I am. It made me think grateful thoughts about the fact that my relatives aren’t assholes the rest of the year, and the schmaltzy things we say to each other on Thanksgiving are actually true, and evident in our relationships all year round.

Hm. I don’t seem to do ungratitude very well. I’ll try harder next time.

Have a Happy H1N1 Thanksgiving!

If it is any consolation, the ‘Godfather’ marathon is well underway. I am thankful every time I get to see Sonny kick the crap out of Carlo in the street.

Not thankful for: spending weeks away from my family working on a global SAP implementation; airline food; jet lag.

Thankful for: our son – who we adopted in February; my wife – who, due to my traveling, takes care of everything at home especially raising our son; having a job that I enjoy and that pays well; being home for Thanksgiving.

I can just hear John Stewart saying, “Woman writes a sarcastic hard-hitting blog everyday, and for her Thanksgiving “Things I’m Not Thankful For” list, people comment about HER HAIR?????

OK, gotta admit it. Your hair does look pretty good for being sick for a week.

My list?

* Drivers who drive slow in the fast lane.

* People who hurt children and animals.

* All wars.

* Sarah Palin.

BTW–I can’t tell you how many turtles I have helped to the other side. Sitting ducks, poor things.

Hope you feel better soon. Enjoy the potatoes!

@theHRD I don’t feel sorry for you with your bank holidays & socialized medicine & whatnot.

@Kerry I know but grrrrrr…. smallpox… colonialism… grrrr… I’m so hardcore angry… LOL. Hope your day gets better. Stupid vacuum cleaner. Also, thanks for the hair props. I used a blow dryer. Amazing what that will do.

@David Aw shucks. ;)

@HeatherTx Awesome list. Fuck all those things on your list. Grrrrr…

@Charlie Wait — your hair looks cute, too. Ha! xoxoxo

@mejaka I’m glad you left that comment. I’m thankful you’re here!

@Steve I like seeing people suffer whilst I suffer. It gives me a feeling of community.

@HRPuter Good list on thankfulness (yes) and shitty stuff (SAP can suck it).

@BZTat I could only hope that Jon Stewart would think about me in any capacity. Mmmmmmmmmmm. Thanks for the kind words. Potatoes are my best friend, today.

Ungrateful? Slow routers, Sarah Palin and the icky economy.

Grateful! Family, friends and community, the ocean, lending a hand, silence within and the smile of a tiny baby.

Happy Thanksgiving all!

Thankful: fabulous friends, happy loved ones and amazing food.

Not so much: traffic, debt and reality TV.

I’m with the HRD – not thankful I’m in the office. Other things:

-Instant coffee

-Stress

-The death of John Lennon

-People who purposely hurt or take advantage of other people (especially vulnerable people)

-Historically inaccurate speed metal. Read a f&*^ing book, Dragonforce. Seriously.

You dudes are depressing. I’m not thankful for hot pans that burn your arms, milk jugs that empty half a cup too soon, hams that leak onto the floor, and cats that go to sleep before you’re finished playing with them.

I had a super Thanksgiving; I laughed my ass off at my own goofy mistakes, clipped coupons for 5am shopping, and spent some good quality time with my family. I hope your holiday was equally as great Laurie (despite the stupid H1N1).

Ungrateful:

-Paying $115 just because my car inspection was overdue by a month. Fuck you, NYS.

-My state’s legislature and senate for being retarded and unable to exhibit any form of competence beyond what a hamster in a wheel could accomplish. Fuck you, NYS.

-Needing new walking/hiking shoes (they have holes) and a new winter jacket (because the dirt is beyond redemption).

-Other things that are way TMI, but you’d all agree that they suck.

-My dog injuring me on my way out the door because he saw a squirrel; busted my fingers and banged both my knees. I still love him.

Grateful:

-I can say “Fuck you, NYS” on a weblog multiple times and not feel self-conscious about it :)

-Homemade applesauce, $5 for a sizable pumpkin pie.

-Having a mostly sane family.

-New beginnings for a friend who got unofficially married today (I’d have gone had I not been 3000 miles away) and a cousin who is engaged.

-Heard a great story about how my brother ground a turkey neck into the stuffing. Don’t try it kids, it’s bad! Ewwww…

-Having a president who is rational.

Laurie, my brother had H1N1 last week and sounded like he was going to die. I really hope you get better! (And your kids too, mejaka!)

@Marsha My router is so slow. I want to punch it in the face. I’m with you on that.

@JustVikki Hate debt. Hate it.

@Ian Historically inaccurate speed metal. That is a first on my blog. Thank you.

@adowling Thank you it was good — I’m just being all punk emo grrrrr angry. ;)

@econopete Whoa, that’s a list! Thanks for the kind words. Was worse last week. This week it’s just a dumb cold, which is Part II of the virus if anyone is curious.

A couple days late, but…

grateful – fabulous fam/friends, incredible bf who puts up with my crazy self, my kittehs, that I’m not a hobo!

ungrateful – disease, people who are starving all over the world, people who take advantage of “the little guy”, dishonesty, people who don’t appreciate the good things in life!

I hope you feel better, Laurie!!
