The Cool Look of Brand Unity: Landsend

by Laurie on July 23, 2007

Landsend is advertising its ‘improved line’ of employee clothing via email and on its website.

This might be radical for me to write, but I don’t object to employee uniforms. What once looked tacky & stupid now looks — with age, wisdom, and a preference for comfortable underwear — simple and professional.

Don’t give me that look! It’s not heresy! I haven’t given up my punk rock roots!

It’s a pair of khakis and a polo, for crying out loud. If you work anywhere other than Manhattan or Los Angeles, you are probably wearing this to work, anyway. There was a time in my life where fashion may have trumped comfort, but there have also been times when I’ve rolled into work wearing a v-neck t-shirt and yoga pants. A pair of khaki pants and a polo shirt would have been an improvement.

Wearing a uniform to work may feel as if you are drinking the corporate kool-aid; however, simple clothing choices for the corporate environment make it easy to remember that it’s a job, not a statement about your life & its meaning. I can’t tell you how many times I ran out to Macy’s at 8:45 PM on a Tuesday night because I had a big meeting in the morning and I wanted to wear something new.

Like anyone gave a shit about my clothing choices?

My hubby wears uniforms at work and he considers it the best thing since sliced bread. Now instead of getting up early to iron his button downs, he can get up 15 minutes before he needs to be there and roll in wearing shorts and flip flops. Gone are the days of investing in rows and rows of slightly-different-but-still-the-same button down shirts from Kohls – now he can invest in t-shirts – and actually get to wear them!
And don’t we as women think men in uniform are sexy?

guess uniforms would make it easier. men in the corporate world already more or less achieve this with a suit & tie or khakis and polo on fridays. and that kind of makes me barf. wearing suits is a way for people to hide/stifle their creativity or, more likely their utter lack of it. and by people i mean me. ;(

What makes the pic great? The sweet clasp belt from haggar/sansabelt… I’m ready to sign on the line for that style…..

Jen: I think men in uniform ARE ABSOLUTELY SEXY. I like men who dress like housemaids and work a vacuum cleaner. Ah, the dreams of the unemployed. So glamorous! :)

Cols – I’m with you on the suits. Sometimes I get creative with the shoes, and by creative, I mean that I mix it up and alternate between 3″ heels and 4″ heels. I need the height. Otherwise, I’m at a loss. I own eight different pairs of black pants. What a waste.

KD – The belt is good, but I like the pleats in the pants.
