Oh man, I hated Mondays in Corporate HR.
- Staff Meetings
- Client Meetings
- Employee Shenanigans
It didn’t take long — maybe 10AM — before I was thinking about lunch.
What are you doing for lunch, today?
- Something healthy & lite?
- Greasy burger?
- Something sweet?
Furthermore, what is the quintessential HR lunch?
These are the important, strategic questions that must be asked, yo!

I’m a consummate brown bagger, so my lunch is leftover chorizo, spinach, and 15 bean soup. And fruit. And Doritos, lest I be TOO healthy.
Mmmmmm leftovers. They aren’t just for recession lunching!
UGH! My co-worker and I were just discussing this…our fave greasy spoon is closed Mondays, and I already ate the sandwhich I brought for lunch at about 9am. Looks like driving over to the school to have lunch with my offspring and eat the “Mystery Meat” offered by the Board of Education.
I just got back from lunch at our employee cafeteria. The lunch is provided free of charge. I had chicken and yellow rice with beans and peas, some soup, and a piece of cake, along with ice water.
We are currently going through a “remodel” of our caferia. The company downsized the plates from 10 inches to 9 inches, going with new multi-colored plates. We put out table tent commiunicating our need to standardize the “equipment”. What realyl seems to matter to people is two things:

What realyl seems to matter to people is two things: They took away the fired chicken, and all the dressings are low fat on the salad bar, including the ranch. A sub-set issue is the removal of bacon bits from the salad bar.
Ultimate HR lunch: sandwich, chips, pickle, cookie and soft drink in a box.

I have a frozen Healthy Choice chicken dinner in the fridge, with a Diet Coke. But I also went to the convenience store across the street this morning and bought poptarts and v-8 juice for a snack. I was starving by 10am. That’s just wrong, since I actually ate breakfast this morning.
We ate here today: http://www.noodles.com/
It wasn’t bad.
The ultimate HR lunch is anything that comes in a brown paper bag.
I’m really lucky, my wife works from a home office, but always seems to have a great lunch ready! Today acorn squash and spanish rice, with some gouda and crackers.
The quintessential HR Lunch can be varied, but it must meet these requirements:
Nothing offensive (this includes meat – especially veal, shellfish, pork), something free trade and organic, and should be an example to all interested in how great you can eat, but still be true to your wellness goals.
There will be time enough for cigarettes and scotch when you get home!
Of any workday, a simple lunch that cost below $10. Sandwiches, soups, salads, you name it.
However, if a workday is during the baseball playoffs or the NCAA Tournament, Burgers and a sample of beer, but not too much.
Sushi! Sushi gives you super-powers that you can use to combat the Employee Shenanigans!!
Witty Banter: I love Noodles, but it puts me into a post-lunch coma. The Wisconsin mac & cheese with parmesan crusted chicken is AWESOME.
I never brown bag, but I should. I just find that I never want to eat what I bring so why fight it? I’m a turkey & provolone sammich + kettle chips + pickle + some sort of non caffinated drink. I typically get the biggest sammich possible and save half of it for my dinners. That way, I feel sort of ok with paying $8-10 for lunch everyday.
I can justify anything.
@Lisa I never brown bag it because I’m looking for an excuse to get the hell out of the office for an hour.
@HR Underling Hmmm… I would prefer McDonalds.
@Michael I love pickles. Must be the Midwesterner in me, but pickles at lunch are mandatory.
@Becky Does the V8 offset the poptart? How does that work? If anything, it sounds delish. Breakfast/lunch of champions!
@Witty I love the Stroganoff at Noodles!
@Jimmy I’m laughing because a politically correct lunch might be lettuce — no meat, no dairy, no beans, no nuts, etc.
@Tracy If you’re spending more than $10 at lunch, UR DOIN IT WRONG. Beer = nirvana.
@Jenn Your powers of rationalization are amazing. You don’t have to tell me twice. I never brown bag my lunch. I hate making the effort.
I’m so lucky with my work. We have two part-time chefs and one part-time chef that work for our company. We get fresh-cooked meals EVERY DAY, using fresh ingredients (no pre-cooked, pre-packaged crap) and we pay nothing. Zero. There’s always a salad bar and a couple choices for entrees. It’s my favorite company perk!
Today we had (among a few other odds and ends):
- Pumpkin Bisque
- Roasted Potatoes
- Roasted Asparagus
- Rice
- Baked Salmon with Lemon
- Roast Beef
- Stuffed Tilapia
We always have a salad bar with fresh fruit and vegetables, and there are often vegetarian entrees including tofu.
